Sometimes Zeitlin is too literal, sometimes he’s too vague. The occasional salty dialogue from the kids feels forced, and not all of the non-professional performances click. But those things never rob the movie of its imagination, emotion, and grit.

WENDY is an ambitious and unconventional take on the classic tale, and benefits from the same directorial approach that made Beasts of the Southern Wild such a remarkable film debut. Wendy has an impressive young cast, and succeeds in establishing an atmosphere all its own. The film departs from the classic Peter Pan tale in odd ways, however, offering its own idiosyncratic and deeply melancholy take on growing old, and the plot seems to accord with the movie's internal fantasy logic while not maintaining any consistent metaphoric insight. It's engaging for sure, but perhaps ultimately a bit unsatisfying.
