As Mandarin-language teacher Ling continues with fruitless IVF treatment while taking care of her ailing father-in-law, she finds herself slowly drawn towards a promising student who seems to have been abandoned by his parents. Outside it's monsoon season, but Ling's inner turmoil looks set to get her into a heap of trouble. Director Anthony Chen brings this simmering Singapore-set drama to boiling point, whilst using an associative and poetic editing rhythm, repeating colors and shapes to highlight the small parallels that link people, and reveal the profound in lovely and subtle ways. With uniformly sensitive performances from the returning cast of Ilo Ilo, Chen's Wet Season is the classy and well-measured teacher-student drama that will get you weeping this autumn.

G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle Ling is a perpetual victim. And Chen doesn't give her many interesting options. Rated: 2/4 Apr 30, 2021 Full Review Katie Walsh Los Angeles Times a portrait of a repressed and oppressed woman learning to chip away at her invisible confines, and within that is a story of generations; the end of life and the beginning of life, and the often messy complexities of everything that happens in between. Apr 29, 2021 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Chen's moody-looking feature, set during the monsoon season, aches with repression. It's also as outraged as "Promising Young Woman" over how men mistreat women. Rated: 3.5/4 Apr 29, 2021 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Wet Season is a quietly troubling, beautifully composed piece of work. Rated: 4.5/5 Jun 3, 2021 Full Review Soham Gadre Film Inquiry In the film's approach to try depicting its scandalous central relationship as naturally occurring as possible, Wet Season sacrifices narrative or emotional thrust. May 14, 2021 Full Review Nathaniel Muir AIPT A personal and intimate look at two people and the relationships in their lives. Heavy handed at times, but nuanced and engaging.
