I used to think of Andrew Ridgeley, one half of the pop duo Wham!, as this lucky guy who had hitched his cart to George Michael. Turns out, the real story is far more interesting.

Wham! inadvertently becomes a music documentary without much interest in music. Like the band themselves, this is a breezy watch, but if there's profundity beneath the perms and the cut-offs, the film struggles to find it.

If all you want from the film is a kind of nostalgic pep pill... you’ll find that the movie totally scratches than itch. But “Wham!” is also a fascinating music documentary that’s telling two stories at once.

We’re so used to the flotsam and jetsum of angst, bad blood and rancour in the ocean of pop history, that the positive energy of the Wham! documentary feels as welcome as a summer breeze.

As a fan piece “Wham!” works pretty well. It highlights the bands ups while steering mostly clear of the downs, and it’s full of the music fans love. But as a meatier documentary it falls a little short.

Another solid musical biopic. This one about Wham! It doesn’t bother dwelling on what came after and just celebrates the unlikely story of two childhood friends conquering the pop world. I actually never knew they were this globally successful.

If you were a child of the 80s and ever wondered what happened to Wham! - this is a great docu. Fairly represented in the words of George and Andrew, it's a good drop into the pop world.
