Variety Staff Variety What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? carries an engaging title but after dreaming it up the writers promptly forgot all about it and launched into a thinly-devised comedy without much substance. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Tom Milne Time Out It is held together by terrific performances, Philip Lathrop's exquisite, pastel-shaded photography, and Blake Edwards' instinct for composition and design, let loose in some pleasantly fantastical images. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times If you might be inclined to take offense at what is callous bad taste in parodying something that was serious, after all, stay away. This only goes to show it's getting tougher all the time to make a marriage of war and farce. May 9, 2005 Full Review Dennis Stack Kansas City Star Colorful as a carnival, crazy as a comic opera, this yarn about some GIs in World War II provokes more laughter than a wild party with every guest a comedian. Jun 26, 2020 Full Review Craig J. Clark The Dissolve It's a well-honed farce that gave Edwards and his cast a solid framework in which to improvise, which they did to superlative effect. Sparky B This movie is a mess. NOT one of Blake Edward's better romps. Unless you find horribly drunk characters doing stupid stuff, then perhaps you will enjoy this film. But it lacks a lot of the sly wit and mad humor you would expect from this director. More than once i lost track of what was going on. This could have been sooo much better considering the great cast it has. It didn't leave me laughing.....just confused. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Audience Member Writer: Here's the plot of my movie: "The Italian soldiers SHOUT AT THE AMERICANS! A LOT!" "The American soldiers SHOUT BACK AT THE ITALIANS! JUST AS MUCH." "The Italian villagers SHOUT AT BOTH THEIR SOLDIERS AND THE AMERICANS! EVEN MORE!" "The German soldiers SHOUT AT ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE!!" "The villagers JUST SHOUT AND SHOUT AND SHOUT!!" The end. Who thought this was a good idea, even in 1966? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Silly farce is loaded with talent and a jovial mood. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a fantastic movie. A great cast, a great story, and a funny situation. Harry Morgan is outrageous! Everyone should see this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This one is hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member OK, so the plot is absolutely absurd, and one may wonder whether the writer and director had been drunk the whole time ... But it really is a very funny movie! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
