Critics Consensus

This high-concept sci-fi action thriller will make you stress-eat all the popcorn while Noomi Rapace (times seven) goes on a murderous spree to find out What Happened to Monday, but it may still leave you hungry in the end.

Cate Young Bitch Media While I thoroughly enjoyed What Happened To Monday, I'm bothered by the film's failure to address a massive plot hole: birth control. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Alex McLevy AV Club ... a crowd-pleasing game of cat-and-mouse, jazzed up by sci-fi flourishes and a high concept. Dec 14, 2017 Full Review Sam Fragoso TheWrap Lands somewhere in a creative middle ground. Part fugitives-on-the-run thriller, part post-apocalyptic familial drama, Wirkola's latest is a perplexing amalgamation. Aug 18, 2017 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The setup may be of higher intellect, but the execution is primarily engaged with marketability; without pulse-pounding thrills (and brief but graphic sexuality), the filmmakers are afraid there won’t be audiences. Rated: 7/10 Jul 15, 2025 Full Review Nathan Mattise Ars Technica What Happened To Monday? has plenty to enjoy, starting with its lead. Jul 27, 2021 Full Review Allen Almachar The MacGuffin It's never boring, but you get a sense that there's a better movie lurking somewhere underneath the surface. Ryan C. What Happened to Monday flew well way under my rarer and I’m only now seeing this even though it was initially released in 2017. Noomi Rapace has a big lift here as she is playing 7 identical siblings in a not so distant dystopian future. What is scary here is this doesn’t seem that far off from reality if there was an over population issue in the World. The movie really challenges the audience with this question, what would you do if you lived in this type of futuristic society. Noomi Rapacs really does a good job here as the whole movie falls on her acting chops. If she doesn’t do things well this movie fails. Glenn Close also does a decent job playing the leader of this society who is running for reelection. Willem Dafoe also does a good job here as well. The movie is slow moving in most parts but also hits all the right notes with it’s drama and action scenes. What Happened to Monday is a very well made film and gets a strong 4 stars out of 5. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/18/25 Full Review Emily B I didn’t watch the entire movie but I did see videos of it. And from what I did see of it it was a pretty decent movie. It could have been better but I do understand that they were trying to make a good movie. The overall premise is amazing but trying to make the premise work is just okay. Letter grade C+ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Mark C A potentially highbrow, sci-fi premise sharply turned into a low brow, rather mindless action flick, with gratuitous nudity. Wasted potential. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Iamwhoi M It held my attention pretty well. It was, however, hard to keep track of who was who among the siblings. Considering all 7 sisters were played by Noomi Rapice, that is to be expected. Basically, this movie is about what the world would be like if the lunatic elitist left got the stranglehold on all levels of power, as they have been trying to, by any means necessary. It ain't pretty. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Audience Member The movie was absolutely horrible, there were scenes that made zero sense. Won't record. mmend it Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/25 Full Review Sharang L Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
