What Josiah Saw may be too unrelentingly unpleasant for some viewers, but this slow-burning look at generational trauma leaves a lingering, nightmarish impact.

Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Dilts and Grashaw build out “What Josiah Saw” thoughtfully, letting the dread from one story bleed into the next, until everything is covered in a dark, dark stain. Aug 8, 2022 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com The family trauma is so clotted-thick, a faster pace and tightened-up editing might have eradicated the slow-motion underwater feel of the whole. Rated: 2/4 Aug 4, 2022 Full Review Phil Hoad Guardian It has a stubborn, almost literary feel for character that accumulates a baleful momentum by the time the finale hits. Rated: 4/5 Aug 3, 2022 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net For those who can bear the devastation, Grashaw’s steadfast direction delivers a complex and powerful payoff. It’s a haunting waking nightmare that seeps into the soul. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Nuha Hassan The UnderSCENE What Josiah Saw is a slow-burn psychological thriller in which the story is spread out to reveal what is underneath the terrible lives of the Graham siblings. Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Filipe Freitas Always Good Movies There’s absolutely nothing charming or pleasant in this bleak slow-burner, and what remains is both shocking and creepy-crawly enough to make us remember it. Craig B What Josiah Saw is a dark, brooding, and gripping film. Underpinned by outstanding performances from Robert Patrick, Nick Stahl, Kelli Garner and Scott Haze, it's nearly 4 stories in one, the first 3 focusing on the 3 children, then culminating in one final act with the whole family. It may be a bit of a slow burn for some, but the ever building sense of dread keeps you hooked right to the stunning ending, and the end is well worth waiting for. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review Dave C A well-crafted, brilliantly thought-out portrayal of trauma and grief, and how the associated memories, pain, and scarring impact on members of the same family in different, sometimes horrific ways. This would have been exceptionally well written if it wasn’t for the use of chapters as a means of structuring the story and its narrative. They don‘t flow well with the overarching story, so cause breaks in both focus and rhythm, which reduce the built-up tension and anticipation at each punctuation. RP and NS perform scarily well together, which is what delivers the most tension and suspense throughout the film, with each thread to the story coming together at the end, where the drama and horror reach their crescendo. A brilliant horror for fans of great acting, brilliant directing, and perfectly matched cinematography Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/01/24 Full Review Thom G "What Josiah Saw" is a well-constructed and mature family drama that brilliantly depicts the scars that traumas can leave. The story's development and suspense are solidly built, with strong performances that give each character deep psychological substance. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Vanessa S Appallingly brilliant cinematography and well established cast make this a must see Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Jason F This one will throw you for a total loop... Soooo unexpected and guessing the whole time. A little slow to start but well worth the wait once you see the ending through. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Bushmaster Total rubbish. Total waste of time watching it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
