Critics Consensus

A pair of young, attractive leads can't overcome When in Rome's reliance on unfunny gags and threadbare rom-com clichés.

Marc Lee Daily Telegraph (UK) You know from the start of Mark Steven Johnson's silly, sunny romcom how it's going to end. Rated: 2/5 Jun 30, 2010 Full Review Robbie Collin News of the World Number of record-scratch jokes? Three. Number of walk-into-a-lamppost gags? Two. Number of laughs? Take a wild guess. Rated: 1/5 Jun 30, 2010 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian This Italian-themed romcom is not quite the most unspeakably-patronising-to-Italy film of all time. That prize belongs to the musical Nine, starring Daniel Day-Lewis. But it runs a very close second. Rated: 1/5 Jun 25, 2010 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins The dialogue is terribly forced, the acting is exaggerated, and the characters are excessively fake. Rated: 3/10 Nov 30, 2020 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com Cute and charming enough to pass for a matinee date. Rated: 2.5/4.0 Sep 27, 2020 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens WHEN IN ROME. A gift from the comic gods themselves. Nov 6, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Bill R Beautiful scenery of Rome and NYC, lots of giggles. Watch if you want something unserious and enjoyable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review WILLIAM f Not a classic but good for a few laughs with a dumb but entertaining premise and a good cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Christian S Very fun light hearted movie! Super entertaining! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Aye E This feels like they didn't bother spending more than a day writing a script then cast any and every recognizable actor or comedian they could expecting that it would make it too big to fail. The star is for Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel, and Danny Devito who were the strongest characters and performers in this, they are charming despite the material. And it's kind of fun watching it to identify each recognizable face that pops up. But otherwise it's an insult to Italy and comedy. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/17/25 Full Review Audience Member the beginning is my favorite part of the movie because of how everything falls into place in the end. overall I think this movie is hated for no reason and you should give it a watch if u enjoy rom-coms that aren't to overly cheesy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Munkhchimeg T I love the delulu people kk. Cute movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews
