Young Native American Tom Black Bull (Frederic Forrest) is uneducated and unsociable, but he knows how to ride a horse. When aging rodeo cowboy Red Dillon (Richard Widmark) sees him best a bucking horse, he takes Tom under his wing and teaches him the ways of the rodeo rider. It isn't long before Black Bull is winning rodeo championships and pulling in real money, but with success comes a new set of troubles, as the two men's relationship starts to strain under the pressure.
