Variety Staff Variety Otto Preminger, director, does an excellent job of pacing the story and of building sympathy for Andrews. Oct 23, 2007 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times Fox may not have plumbed the depths of realism this time, but it still looks interesting, even two-thirds of the way down. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 25, 2006 Full Review Time Out A weatherbeaten Andrews gives one of his finest performances. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand [Dana Andrews'] chiseled face made him convincing as both a working class cop and a master of industry and paired nicely with [Gene] Tierney’s sculptured features: scar tissue and smooth glamour brought together by violence. May 4, 2024 Full Review Ian Thomas Malone ianthomasmalone.com Preminger's slick noir gem presents a damning indictment of the criminal justice system's perpetual rot and the kinds of cops who take the law into their own hands. Nov 30, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A formidable and gritty performance from a gruff Dana Andrews highlights the pensive and anxious Where the Sidewalk Ends. Steve D Solid but a waste of Tierney's talent. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Murty C This is one the best film noir films that I've seen - a realistic (and understandable) plot, no "dames", and deft direction/production by Otto Preminger. The leads - Dana Andrews as a loose cannon detective, and Gene Tierney as the daughter of a wrongfully accused taxi driver - give convincing performances as does Karl Malden in the role of the precinct captain. This is not a whodunnit but more of the study of diverse characters with all their human frailties enmeshed in a dark story, a hallmark of Preminger's films. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/22/22 Full Review deke p "WHERE the SIDEWALK ENDS" (1950) 1950 ! 'Film Noir'. VERY SERIOUS plot and acting. Honest detective in trouble for accidental moider. DANA ANDREWS! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Exceptional crime pic with performances, story, visuals to satisfy any genre enthusiast. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review paul d Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends features a great story by Ben Hecht, outstanding art direction, and most of all a great performance by Dana Andrews. He's a stoic, hard cop, seething with rage against criminals and often abusing his power. He's a driven man, but what drives him isn't revealed until late in the film. That kind of restraint seems to be a trademark of Otto Preminger. He is smooth and sometimes subtle, letting his audience figure some things out. This is a gritty tale of New York's underworld and of a man's personal redemption. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Tom M Classic noir except that Andrews' character is so angry and psychotic (and he's the protaganist!), that the movie is almost lost. The rosy ending wasn't exactly noir. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/21 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
