Steve D The acting carries it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/03/24 Full Review kevin w For some reason the 1930s were chockablock with films about lurid, panting, white lust in the jungle --- it was all but a travel brochure. In this one, disgraced nightclub singer Carole Lombard (so low that she performs for the natives, gasp!) is "saved" by local honcho Charles Laughton, playing a Cockney come into his own in the tropics, lording his civilized civilization over the natives. At only a little over an hour, how many white guys hiding in the jungle because of disgrace at home (the only rationale to be out in the jungle by civilization's reckoning) make a pass a poor little bra-less pre-Code Carole? And will there be a native uprising in time to save her? Something only for those disgraced lovers of pure pulp, hiding themselves in their own personal jungles.
