Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz So many things about the documentary White Boy confound our expectations of where a Netflix-hosted "true crime" yarn will head to. Nov 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Bill M Very interesting story. So much more in depth than the movie depicted. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/24/23 Full Review Tracy Unable to watch due to poor sound quality. Can't watch with surround sound either. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Audience Member WARNING - SPOILERS - BETTER TO READ AFTER YOU WATCH IT: The film was technically well planned and edited, but lacked pathos. The film maker tried to present the story as an uninvolved observer, but never made you care about anything he presented. He describes a horribly corrupt Detroit reeling in corruption, but then let's it pass by like wallpaper, suggesting the parole of one person somehow trumped the importance of this astounding era in the city's evolution. He really never makes the main character all that sympathetic, but merely describes him as having too long a sentence for his crimes. He suggests that he was the victim of over-aggressive law enforcement agencies using him as a confidential informant in his youth, but provides no real investigation of the damage that this horrible era did to the citizens of the Motor City. It felt like the filmmaker lacked empathy for the victims of all the criminals he filled his film with, but doggedly took the position that a relatively minor injustice of a criminal's lifelong imprisonment was of paramount importance. I may sympathize with the white boy's plight, but I can't help but think that the film maker missed the big picture, while peering in on a relatively minor story, quite the paradox.
