Blu B Compared to Gator (1976) this is a significant step up in almost every level but still suffers from the same problems that did. (Seen the sequel first) The music is good, maybe not catchy but more consistent than the first. The editing is just ok here though. You know the story here is much more focused (though far from perfect) than the second half or anything Gator had to offer. It's just it can feel very meandering in the middle. The romance, car chases, the back and forth with the Sheriff, it all just feels very scattered and barely comes together enough at the end. That being said everything else isn't bad here. Reynolds in this is better and has charisma but the persona he'd adopt later isn't really here. It's a much more grounded and gritty Reynolds. The Sheriff is a bit forgettable and despite being the villian not on screen that much at all. The humor here is very subdued compared to the sequel. It's more charming and good ol boy type of stuff than laugh out loud jokes or slapstick gags. It's charming more often than it is flat. It's a comedy style action flick more than anything with ahint of crime to it. It doesn't waste time setting things up either. It's a much more serious film than the sequel also despite that. The car chases are good and probably the best thing here. They don't have the over the top factor later Reynolds movies do. Also we never really explore deeply the relationship with his brother, barely any cat and mouse with the Sheriff besides the end chase, and there really isn't anything deep here character wise. But if your a die hard Reynolds fan this might be worth checking out still. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Jelisije J Burt Reynolds takes on a local sheriff who killed his kid brother in this ok southern action flick. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/23 Full Review Audience Member The thing about white lightning is that he only strikes once The late Burt Reynolds stars and the late Ned Beatt Reynolds plays an ex con, Gator for running a moonshine business A corrupt sheriff J.C. Connors kills his brother and it sends him on a path of revenge He goes undercover for the United States treasury regardless of any evidence to legally bring him down This movie is very slow It isn't until and hour and 16 min things start to get moving The car chases are the only real bit of excitement here with a bit of justice served at the end There's better ones like this though Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Its Burt starting to be the movie star he was destine to be. Great supporting cast and really entertaining for a 70's flick Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review l g a movie of its time, and a pretty good one at that. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A Burt Reynolds action movie centered on southern moonshiners. The easily accessible story line and vivid camerawork make it an easy film to watch without having to pay much attention. You can miss 5-10 minutes (here and there) and still get the gist of things. A good movie when you want to take a break from the serious. Millions of Americans have watched these movies; Burt made millions making them.
