Stephen Romei The Australian Whiteley's art was landmark, and remains important. The life the artist lived doesn't change that. When this documentary considers the art and the artist, and blends the two into one complex life, it is at its best. Rated: 3/5 May 12, 2017 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The result is an absorbing portrait, marred only by Bogle's decision to use actors in a series of dramatic reconstructions. Rated: 3.5/5 May 10, 2017 Full Review Lynden Barber Limelight This is a major documentary that deserves to be seen by anyone in Australia with even a passing interest in art. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Vicky Roach Daily Telegraph (Australia) Photographs, archival interviews and rare footage provide tantalising glimpses of the man who has become almost indistinguishable from the myth. Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2017 Full Review David 'Mad Dog' Bradley Adelaide Review It's a wonderfully vivid study of a controversial guy who, just for once, changed everything. May 12, 2017 Full Review Jim Schembri 3AW Fascinating bio-doc about the brilliant, troubled Australian artist...director James Bogle does a great job illustrating his life and the impact of his work, with much in the film suggesting how far ahead of his time Whiteley was. Audience Member It was truly incredible, Andrew Blaikie did an immensely good job with his role! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review wayne m Whiteley is an illuminating look at an icon of Australian art. This documentary gave me a complete feel for the man and the artist in a thorough and artistic way. There is no narration and no talking heads, rather an organic feel with clips of the man and quotes from him. Some in his own voice and some read by actors. Whiteley was a candle that burnt far too briefly. He gave so much joy to the world and still does. And yet his life ended far too early in tragic circumstances. If you are interested in great Australian lives then I totally recommend this fine documentary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
