What to Know

Critics Consensus

For filmgoers predisposed to enjoy Todd Solondz' brand of black comedy, Wiener-Dog won't disappoint -- but those put off by previous works need not apply.

Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Solondz loves revisiting his creations (he did it in Life During Wartime and, glancingly, Palindromes). Alas, he never improves on the originals. Rated: 3/5 Aug 14, 2016 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) Wiener-Dog is a mordantly funny tour of the human condition seen from the low-slung position of a sausage dog. Rated: 4/5 Aug 12, 2016 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is a movie with a hard core of disillusionment. Rated: 4/5 Aug 12, 2016 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages With this collection of characters for an anthology set-up, Wiener-Dog is just about the Todd Solondz-iest film you could expect from writer-director Todd Solondz, but there is an interesting formal setup to set it apart from the more standard formula... Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson For lack of a better term, this is a filmmaker being an a**hole because he can and he doesn’t care. You will either champion or loathe that supposed brilliance and brashness. Rated: 1/5 Jun 26, 2022 Full Review Nick Levine NME (New Musical Express) Slight and stilted in parts, hilarious and memorable in others, all held together by a brilliant Danny DeVito. Isa B This film was rather disappointing. It was hardly funny and I found the stories to be mostly uninteresting. There wasn't even a direct chain of narration on the dog changing hands. I am a big fan of Todd Solondz and I love what he did with Happiness and Welcome to the Dollhouse, but Wiener-Dog missed the mark for me. I do not recommend. 52/100 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review LM W How often do you get the chance to watch a movie where the message is People are terrible, life sucks, and artists(including the director of this movie) are no talent hacks and the successful people are the biggest phonies of all. Worst part is, you are the one that made the effort to watch it. You will feel like the director is laughing at you for being the latest sucker. Save yourself 90 minutes. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review Dave C It is slow and tedious for much of the time, and it takes the majority of the film to realise it's not going anywhere, has nothing to say, and that the various owners' stories have nothing in common, and provide no overarching theme. Whilst watching, I couldn't help feeling it is trying to channel Napoleon Dynamite… and failing. There are a few genuinely funny moments, but nowhere near enough to say this is a comedy, or to redeem it in any way Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Steve D One of the worst excuses for comedy I have ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Teresa M Worst movie ever! The ending is not only suddenly tragic, but becomes literally unbearable to watch. The only reason to have this ending as it is is sheer idiocy and cruelty! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review BIG R This movie was made by Satan himself. The abuse of an animal is not funny. The negligence of the first parents was horrible and as soon as they told the Son they murdered the dog and threw it in an oven and the little boy asked about God taking the Dog, then the Mom says we don't believe in God. I stopped the movie. Then seeing other reviews that the dog gets ran over 6 times. Thank you Jesus for not letting me finish this EVIL movie. For those who like it, you must be sick in the head. I pray the person who made this movie fails at his pathetic career. Because he is disgusting. I 💜 my mini weenie dog. Poor dog Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
