Armed only with a bow and an ensemble of animal skins, Martin sets off into the forest in a misguided attempt to overcome his midlife crisis. A chance meeting with a fugitive named Musa leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners, and Martin's family not far behind. As an unlikely friendship develops and wildly original set-pieces unfold, Martin's quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.

Critics Consensus

A delightfully deadpan comedy with plenty of heart, Wild Men proves there's still plenty of humor to be mined from the male midlife crisis.

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News A far more textured story than its first few minutes would suggest... funny and heartbreaking. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Edward Porter Times (UK) ... Its gentle humour and strong emotions make it easy to like. Rated: 3/5 Aug 8, 2022 Full Review Anton Bitel Little White Lies ...wild Coen-esque caper comedy ensues. But the pervasive air of sadness from the beginning never quite leaves these simple men. Aug 2, 2022 Full Review Douglas Davidson Elements of Madness Daneskov and Pape’s "Wild Men" continually surprises in poignancy over and again, even amid the laughs and bloody violence. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Matt Hudson What I Watched Tonight There are gags and moments that work but disappointingly these are few and far between in a movie that promised much but delivered little. Rated: 5/10 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix The ending of the comedy/drama Wild Men is very predictable and requires some suspension of disbelief regarding law enforcement, but this movie is ultimately an entertaining story about two strangers and their unlikely friendship as outlaws. Aender S Nice comedy turning into a drama with magnificent Norwegian landscapes and lots of Nordic dry humour. In a few instances I wished I'd speak a Scandinavian language because I didn't get the jokes when the Danish didn't understand the Norwegians and the other way around. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Assem K Before you is an utterly unique blend of craftful storytelling, marvelous scenery, and sheer humor. Just as difficult as Wild Men shows it is to grasp the bittersweet wisdom behind the human condition, so too it is to try and do this artwork justice by any synopsis. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Bill K Loved this movie - the plot, actors, the settings, the themes of humanity and family and belonging. An unexpected gem. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/10/23 Full Review Mauro L (Mauro Lanari) The unresolved drama of "Civilization and Its Discontents" (Freud '29-'30) that the Danish director treats as grotesque, amusing, caricatured, humorous buddy movie. The film dares to let tragedy inexorably take over on the usual dark comedy tone. Impeccable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review dave e I really liked this film, although it has English sub titles all through the movie. The scenery is beautiful and the acting is well executed. It's not really a comedy at all, more of a crime drama mixed in with a unique storyline. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review jim h Went in with low expectations; a sub-titled Scandinavian John Candy - type film I thought; slapstick comedy tinged with pathos. Wild Men certainly has those elements, but it has a lot more depth & fully rounded characters than a regular farce, and there are little sprinkles of Cohen brothers or Tarantino - type plot twists adding drama & uncertainty where one might normally expect predictability. The wry, ironic Danish / Norwegian humour is also a treat. It assumes the viewer can spot the ironies on their own, without having everything spelled out in capital letters. Finally, you know you've watched a good movie when you find yourself caring about what happens to the characters by the end, however improbable their journey.
