Critics Consensus

Fatally undermined by dodgy accents and a questionable story, Wild Mountain Thyme is a baffling misfire for a talented filmmaker and impressive cast.

Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review Loud and obnoxious...quite astonishingly panned, and it's so bad that there's an outside possibility it might become a marginal cult classic. But honestly? I doubt it. May 10, 2021 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) Shanley has an Oscar and a Pulitzer (he wrote the sublime Moonstruck, and the stage and screen versions of Doubt). Here, that's easy to forget... Rated: 3/4 Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Alessandra Rangel InSession Film The script feels old-fashioned, offering contrasting results throughout the duration of the movie: sometimes it is adorable, sometimes reprehensible. Lilah N Ok, I don’t think any of you really understand how perfectly spectacular this movie was. I might get a little spoilery, so be wary. There’s that whole bit about the land between the gates that Rosemary owns, and she owns because her daughter bought it for her after Anthony pushed her down. Then we learn why Tony sold it. He sold it to buy an actual ring for his wife because he learned he did really love her. The ring which Anthony was going to propose to Rosemary with when he lost it. Rosemary found the ring and kept it as a sign. The writing is amazing, but not only that. The scenery and the score for the movie is beautiful. People are quick to judge things. It’s a weird movie to be sure. My mom watched it first and loved it, so I watched it. I didn’t like it the first time, but since my mom put it on every now and again because it had become her comfort movie, after the third time, I fell in love with it. It is my comfort movie now. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/24 Full Review Mark B I think for 1 hour and 15 minutes I hated this movie. The end marginally brought it back to don’t make me ever have to watch this again. So boring, so frustrating. I believe the bad script and ridiculous characters are meant to be charming. Those crazy Irish but no it is just bad bad writing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Audience Member No one could ever think this could be a realistic story, but I don't particularly care; it's quirky and sweet and charming and I don't care about how perfect the accents are. Christopher Walken in a film often means it's just tongue in cheek to begin with; Jamie Dornan plays the dork as a dork should look and love lorn Emily Blunt is as good as she always is. The peripheral actors are fun too. I don't know what the big problem here is. It pushes an Irish stereotypical narrative, but that's part of what makes it kind of fun. Maybe it's that it's a story that you can chuckle at while becoming a little invested in seeing how in the world it will wrap up. I have seen it a few times now as it pops up here and there and my opinion doesn't change. It remains a little slice of sweet distraction in a far too serious world. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Michael B Terrible story line. Beyond ridiculous. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review Ann R Worth watching to see Christopher Walken, especially in the scene with Jamie Dornan. Memories of my reticent Irish uuncles and cousins, and all the bachelors in Ireland. Much of the dialogue rang very true, Emily Blunt did very well with the accent in my opinion and her voice and Jamie’s were charming. Wild Mountain Thyme is a traditional song, and not, as another reviewer said, a song written by Sinead O’Connor. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Paula K Ridiculous and dull story line with terrible fake accents. Not sure why anyone would read this script and want to act in it.
