Audience Member The film's first rate production values make the heat & hedonism of Java come alive for the viewer. The Javanese dancing is of particular interest. The use of sound effects in this late silent film is of some significance - they perfectly illustrate where some film purists thought the cinema should remain: with music and effects, but definitely no dialogue. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member First movie assignment in my new Coursera class on Marriage in Hollywood. Even though I had a hard time staying awake, I don't blame it on the movie. It was a little slow and a little long, but it was beautifully done. The soundtrack was great and the commentary on marriage was good. It's obvious that the husband needed to give more attention to his wife. She tried so hard to make their exotic trip exciting, while he was wrapped up in his business. While the Prince added an interesting twist, I was slightly annoyed with him, but Lillie's reaction to him and slow softening was very well played out. How much the husband actually knew and what was playing out in his head was also well done, kept some suspense going at the end. Sidney Franklin had a lot of visual talent, and it shows in this movie, from the set design, to the costume design, to the incredible camera work. The story is deliciously soapy and melodramatic.
