Critics Consensus

Windfall is hardly a bounty of cinematic riches, but a killer cast keeps this minimalistic thriller from going creatively bankrupt.

John Nugent Empire Magazine Short, sharp and mostly satisfying, this is a thriller that sticks to the stripped-back fundamentals of the genre — no more, no less. Rated: 3/5 Mar 19, 2022 Full Review Susannah Gruder indieWire It should be commended, however, for making its flawless setting as claustrophobic for us as it is for the three characters. Rated: C Mar 18, 2022 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Theres at least one great performance in here, and the whole venture clocks in at a blissfully brief 90 minutes or so. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 18, 2022 Full Review Juanma Fernández París El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico) Although Windfall's efforts to not be “more of the same” is what makes it entertaining, the fact that the movie ends with a forced climax that's typical of the genre that it tried so hard to undermine is even more frustrating. [Full review in Spanish] Dec 5, 2023 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community Windfall embodies a classic noir suspense story, fraught with some incredible character performances from Jesse Plemons, Lily Collins, and Jason Segel Rated: 9/10 Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Jim Schembri jimschembri.com Terrible, talky three-hander...A good idea squandered, waste of a top cast. Chalk it up as a dud. Rated: 1/5 Oct 15, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Geila K Boring I dont fet what's the point of the novie. I wasted my time for this bad movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review D E Ugh… so slow. Didn't feel like a thriller at all. A lot of drama and low paced sitting and waiting. Boring. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Luis M. D Nearly everything was fine in this slow and sober psychological thriller until the ending. The closing act is unforgivably grotesque and illogical–it simply does not follow from the characterization that the script so carefully managed to build. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Chuck This movie is vapid …. What a god awful script whomever wrote this wrote. Complete waste of time Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/23 Full Review Alec C I'll start off by saying the acting in this movie was great. Jesse Plemons is so good at playing a guy you want to punch in the face... But the pacing in this movie was so bad. It was so slow. *SPOILER ALERT* I could've dealt with the slow pace if there was some glorious payoff at the end... But there wasn't. We never find out the real story behind Jason Segel's character. It would've REALLY helped the movie to learn his backstory. We learned a little bit about Lily Collins' backstory, but not enough to justify being a homicidal maniac. This movies was sooooo close to being really good, but it just dropped the ball at the end. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Hayden L I feel like this movie is getting unnecessary hate because people went into it with different expectations. I thought that this was a phenomenal character-driven movie that really banks on the acting talent and cinematography to tell a story about three types of people. Each main character is an archetype of a type of person in everyday life and it dives into enough detail to fully flesh them out without making it too specific to be more than just an archetype. This is further supported by none of the characters actually being named, just CEO, Wife, and Man. Overall, fantastic watch, definitely more of an artistic film but it achieves its goal imo.
