Caryn James New York Times One of these days, maybe Kurt Russell and Kelly McGillis will look back at Winter People and laugh. Rated: 1/5 May 20, 2003 Full Review Empire Magazine A plodding period drama with its fair share of ludicrous plot twists. Rated: 2/5 Apr 21, 2003 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader The film is shot in 'Scope, but the effort is essentially wasted by dull center framing that makes the format superfluous. Jan 1, 2000 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...an often sluggish melodrama that admittedly benefits from its compelling rural atmosphere and assortment of agreeable performances... Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 10, 2022 Full Review Richard Freedman Newhouse News Service Not since D.W. Griffith churned out his "Orphans of the Storm" weeper in 1922 have we had a melodrama as unabashed as this high-minded but clumsy epic of unwed motherhood. Steve D Should have been much better with this cast. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Superb performances with compelling characters and cinematography that creates the perfect atmosphere for this highly underrated film. Ignore the film snobs who spend their time dissecting films instead of enjoying them and watch this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Stranded depression-era father finds refuge with single mother whose family is in a long-standing feud with another across the river. Held my attention, liked it better than the box cover suggested I would. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Competently photographed. Couldn't tell what was going on half the time, we end up in places the filmmakers never led us. We're just inexplicably there on the other side of the cut. The synopsis given on WikiPedia is more enlightening than anything that actually occurs in the film. The best part of this movie is the end-title ballad, the Jimmy Webb-penned "Lightning in a Bottle", sung beautifully by Jennifer Warnes, this version is reportedly Webb's favorite recording of the song, and one can easily hear why. Which makes it a shame that the soundtrack album is out of print and regularly goes for $100 used! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Great story about hardship, love and sacrifice. I've watched it several times. Good cinematography and great cast. I recommend it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good movie. I recommend watching it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
