Audience Member I really love this movie and have seen it many times over the years. It was ahead of its time: Winterhawk spoke almost entirely in the Blackfeet language, Native Americans were not depicted as "savages." The late, great Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up and said it was reminiscent of the classic John Ford westerns EXCEPT for it's even-handed depiction of Native Americans. A great ensemble cast led by Leif Erickson as Guthrie and Michael Dante as Winterhawk. And the location scenery is beautiful; it is a beautifully shot film. I highly recommend seeing "Winterhawk." Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It was the 1800s and a small pox outbreak in the Indian territory in Montana broke out. The Blackfoot tribe lead by Winterhawk was their Chief. Here he's portrayed by Michael Dante. Feeling betrayed by the whites he kidnaps a white woman in retaliation. Unfortunately two white instigators take matters into their own hands making the tensions between everybody that much higher. They strike first fearing the smallpox infection doing their own justice. Dawn Wells as the white woman Clayanna narrates much of the story. Winterhawk, Clayanna and several others make their way into Canada braving the elements while also being pursued by her uncle and Winterhawk's blood-brother Guthrie. It's been a long and treacherous history between the native Americans and the whites. This movie pays a lot of respect as much as possible given what's transpired for many years. Even another tribe can strangle another with words. Is it better to die in battle than of old age or disease? We can be better than our enemies if we forgive. Winterhawk isn't the sole focus of the movie but rather a lot of other elements surrounding him. When it does focus on him though he's a strong proud leader responsible for looking after his people. You actually do feel his frustration with the white man's influence. Sooner or later though we see what damage the constant warring with one another leads to. A movie that's deep and rich in our history that deserves more attention. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Another great old classic western with more of a lean toward the often noble Native American struggle. I'd suggest this 1 to anyone.
