Critics Consensus

Winter's Tale tries to retain the grandiose sweep of its source novel, but fails to fill it in with characters worth rooting for or a sensible plot.

A fine book fights gallantly to escape from its straitjacket, but eventually lies down and allows itself to be trampled underfoot by bad ideas. Go to Full Review

Findlay narrates in huge chunks of religiose voice-over. "Nothing has been without purpose - nothing," she concludes. Well, perhaps not nothing. Go to Full Review

The introductory voice-over... generously still gives you time to dash back to the foyer and demand your money back to watch something less stomach-churning - like escalators going up and down. Go to Full Review

[Unfortunately,] Winter's Tale falls very flat, and unless you are watching it for the actors, don't pay money for this movie. Go to Full Review

A frustrating movie. It overly complicates a boy-from-the-wrong- side-of-the-tracks-meets-rich-girl story with a bunch of hocus pocus that wastes some good work from Farrell, Findlay and Russell Crowe. Go to Full Review

Goldsman's writing is not up to par here with dialogue that is clunky, simplistic, and at times downright befuddling. Go to Full Review

First, this is one of my two absolute favorite novels ever. I've read it more times than I can count. It does confound, somewhat, but it's lyricism and expression and language, and milieu are astounding. I always wished it could be a film but knew it couldnt, because it would need to be many hours long. I read this at a time when streaming didn't exist and "Limited Series" were a thing we hadn't seen since the 70's and early 80's on network TV, called "mini series". This novel would absolutely be sensational as limited series on Apple or Amazon, but there's no way to make it a single film without dramatically simplifying it, which is what he have here: a marked simplification of one of several plots that drive the amazing novel. I knew that going in, and was able to deeply appreciate the film for it's high aims. It does indeed capture one of the several powerful themes of the novel: namely Transcendent love. Goldsman leaves in just enough of the novels mysticism and magic realism to confuse movie goers, but for anyone who's read the novel, we can;t help but fill in the many many blanks. But here's where it really get me: I learned when the film was released that it was also one of Goldsman's favorite novels, and that he too always thought it couldn't be done. But when his wife died, he very nearly left writing altogether, claiming that his joy and drive to create had died with his beloved wife. But at some point, he realized that (again, one of many) major themes of the novel is love that transcends time. At that point he decided to resurrect himself by making this film, knowing it would only focus on a about 1/4 of the novel. Knowing that, and loving the book as much as I do, I couldn't not like this attempt, and what it meant for Goldsman. It was a fresh and unique story concept (at least for me) and held my interest all the way through. See more Sandra S Jul 13 Es una de mis películas favoritas. Mágica, hermosa. See more Steven P Apr 21 If not the absolute WORST film adaptation of a novel ever commited to film, it's gotta be among the bottom five. A grotesque misrepresentation, and a horrendous dumbing down, of both the book's themes and its sensse of wonder. Stay far, far away. See more Read all reviews
