Winter's Tale tries to retain the grandiose sweep of its source novel, but fails to fill it in with characters worth rooting for or a sensible plot. Read critic reviews

Enchanting and magical, Winter's Tale is a unique blending of period drama and fantasy. The story follows a thief in early 20th century New York City who falls in love with an heiress who's terminally ill, but dark forces conspire to prevent their love from taking hold. Starring Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Russell Crowe, the casting is fairly strong and their performances are quite good. Additionally, the look of the film is extraordinary, and gives New York City a surreal, storybook feel. Also, composers Rupert Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer provide a transcendent score that pairs beautifully with the visual aesthetic. Delightfully charming, Winter's Tale is a romantic and stylish film that captures the imagination.

I get the themes, what they were trying to show, but I just didn't care for it. Atleast it had a good ending. Mostly I didn't understand the plot; it didn't make a lot of sense. And the film couldn't help but bore me. 8/17/14

When I saw the trailer for this I thought this looked pretty good, and very different. While it is different, it didn't really work for me. It's very melodramatic and cheesy. But worse of all, it takes itself way too seriously. Had this movie had a real sense of humor, I think it could have been very good. It's hard to summarize, but it's about angels against demons, and it takes place over a century. The cast is good, but they've all done much better. In time, I can see people growing more fond of it. Hell, maybe another viewing or too and I would change my opinion. But based off my one viewing, I didn't care for it. Emily didn't really like it either, but she usually isn't into the movies with magic and stuff. I'd say the only movie that you could compare to this, in a weird way could be "Legend". But that is much, MUCH better. Good for a one time watch, but most people may not finish it.

I had to watch this movie twice... seriously... I could not get over some parts of the story at all, and I thought that must be a logical explanation somewhere given earlier, but I missed it... but no... Winter's Tale (released in the United Kingdom as A New York Winter's Tale) is a supernatural drama based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Mark Helprin. I have no intention of reading a book, but I hope that maybe there everything is much clearer. Written and directed by Akiva Goldsman (in his directorial debut) this is a film for people who prefer dreams to anything else. It reminded me on those love novels sold at the news-agencies in the 1970's and 1980's in Europe - no substance, just smoke-like dreams which will disappear after waking up. I have no idea what were the stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe, and Will Smith thinking signing for this movie, the screenplay could not be much better that what was filmed! There was no wander that after release was panned by critics and was a bomb at the box office - it earned only half the amount of the budget of $60 million. The story starts in 1895, when a young immigrant couple with a child is refused entry into Manhattan because they have "consumption" (TB), they decide to place their son in a model sailboat named "City of Justice" to float there safely. In 1916, the infant boy has grown up to be Peter Lake, a thief raised by a demon posing as the gangster Pearly Soames. Peter is chases by Pearly's gang and is marked for death when he decides to leave. But , when he was cornered in a confrontation, a mysterious white horse, his guardian angel, rescues him. Peter wants to run away from the city but the horse encourages him to steal from one last mansion... The mansion is the home of Beverly Penn, a young woman dying of consumption... Initially Warner Bros. attempted to sign Martin Scorsese in 2002, but Scorsese turned down the chance to direct the movie calling it "unfilmable", and I agree with him 100%! At the end it was just this mumbo-jumbo of theories with no background or any support, making no sense. I wish I wasted this time somewhere else, regardless the grandeur of the cinematography.
