Critics Consensus

Wish earns some tugs at the heartstrings with the way it warmly references many of the studio's classics, but nostalgia's no substitute for genuine storytelling magic -- no matter how beautifully animated it might be.

Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) On one level, the total artistic failure of Wish is reassuring because it shows there are occasions when vast amounts of money and supposed expertise really don’t make a difference. Rated: 1.5/5 Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Kyle Smith Wall Street Journal On the basis of its half-thought-out script, Hollywood writers’ fears of being supplanted by artificial intelligence appear well-founded. This movie seems proud, even smug, about recycling scraps from other fairy tales. Dec 5, 2023 Full Review Philip De Semlyen Time Out Despite the passive nature of his foul(ish) scheme, Magnifico is Disney’s best villain since Tangled. Rated: 3/5 Dec 1, 2023 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Wish works well as a tribute to Disney not only through the many easter eggs but also because its very own premise calls back to one of Disney’s core concepts of wishing upon a star. Rated: 4/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Calum Cooper Cinerama Film Wish is a decent film with good themes to share, although it somewhat buckles under the weight of its status. Rated: 3/5 Jul 19, 2024 Full Review Josh Larsen LarsenOnFilm ...would be instantly forgettable if it weren’t for the bizarre story choices that can only be described as autopopulated hiccups. Annette When I first watched the movie, I thought it was a decent watch, but not a favorite 5-6/10. Enjoyed the Easter eggs, plot somewhat typical, but good to watch once. The cast did their part well with what they were given. Upon learning more of behind the scenes and rejected ideas for the film, my opinion of the movie changed. Wish was supposed to commemorate and celebrate Disney's history. After learning what could've been with Earendele aka "Starboy" being Asha's love interest and Queen Amaya being a villain as well, I can't see the movie the same way. The demo version of "At All Costs" should have its time to shine, and certainly would be as iconic as "A Whole New World" and "I See the Light." Queen Amaya could've been a twist villain with King Magnifico being a villain from the start, they could've blended modern and classic Disney, they could've had a duet. Making Asha "adorkable" is tiring and boring. I expected her to be more graceful like the older princesses, and the movie would have been beautiful in 2D animation. Disney could've had both their cute star and Starboy, the best of both worlds. The storyline and characters are not as memorable. I'm sorry, Disney, but you messed this one up big time. Once Upon a Studio has more heart than Wish. I prefer you redoing Wish instead of wasting time and money on remakes that are unnecessary. Creativity and originality is what has always made Disney. Take inspiration and make things your own. I wish Disney would do the 100th anniversary justice by making Wish the beautiful movie we all know it can be. I give this movie a 2/10. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Alyssa My daughter loved it Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Gabriel Bourque This movie was Soulless Garbage, too much nostalgia to classic Disney films since 1937, plus the Villain is the only character that's likable the others... Immoral Bullshit Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/26/24 Full Review Hunter Hardly the best from Disney, but far from the disaster some people make it out to be. Arianna Debose and Chris Pine are excellent, the songs feel instantly memorable (especially the villain song that I will never get out of my head) and the credits are almost as magical as Avengers: Endgame. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review LL Many critique this movie, but I enjoyed it! It was light hearted, had a positive message, and some catchy songs! Plus, it gave tribute to old Disney animation! Definitely a must see if you’re a Disney fan! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Joshua E The music is elite. They basically took Lin Manuel Miranda's formula for writing and copied it. The story is fun. The characters are likable. The ending was well foreshadowed and satisfying. It celebrates the 100 yes of Disney wonderfully. The after credits scene was a gem. I missed it the first several times watching it (my kids love it). They really needed to include the after credits scene earlier so everyone sees it. It ties the whole movie together even better. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
