From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man. Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma). But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they're attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Director Leigh Whannell's attempt at bringing a fresh psychological dimension to the Wolf Man comes at the expense of proper scares, although fans of body horror will still find some tasty morsels to chew on.

Audience Says

Wolf Man could’ve been a contender in the werewolf canon and comes so close thanks to its immersive atmosphere and capable cast, but it is ultimately severed by its tepid approach at horror delivered at a languid pace.

Abbott is a smart, soulful actor, but there’s not enough tension in his character before Blake starts changing; he seems less like a case study in latent, animalistic rage than an unlucky sap who took his family on vacation at the wrong time. Go to Full Review

Compared to The Invisible Man it's a serious misstep for Whannell. Compared to The Mummy, well, that might have been a wreck of a movie, but at least it was occasionally fun. Go to Full Review

The dialog felt cold and emotionless. Even during scenes that were supposed to be touching, suspenseful, or exciting, all of the characters seemed to deliver the most boring inhuman lines. Go to Full Review

This is not something that breaks the formula and recreates it in a way that's profound and nuanced, but it is a solid monster movie. Go to Full Review

Mike D Van Lukas Nov 16 The Universal Monsters are an iconic part of history! These modern-day reimaginationed retellings are entertaining, and well made. I was pleasantly surprised by the final transformation too! See more LC Aug 8 Not bad but not great either. Beautifully shot, just kind of a flat storyline. See more Cynthia Jun 28 Ehhh, not the best, BUT still worth watching. The ending sucked. See more Juandi Jun 6 The movie isn’t bad but it definitely lacks something. The actors did a great job though their performances are probably the best part of the film. See more Kevin May 19 decent with cool new takes on Wolfman movies See more Sheri Apr 13 Unfortunately, it didn’t quite hit the mark. I wasn’t invested in the characters because it didn’t give us much of a backstory for us to eventually care about what will happen to them. And I honestly could not even recall their names.
