walter m In "Wolves, Pigs and Men," Jiro(Ken Takakura) has just gotten out of jail. In return, the syndicate he used to work for wants his older brother Ichiro(Rentaro Mikuni) to pay him to get lost, so they can conduct business without any interference. Which is fine with Jiro. Except for the part about Jiro robbing them first with the help of his younger brother Sabu(Kinya Kitaoji) who still has issues with being left behind to care for their ailing mother who just recently died and whose funeral Jiro missed. "Wolves, Pigs and Men" is a very taut, tough and sharp noir film, with perhaps the funkiest jazz score ever.(For such a hard boiled film, it is odd that Sabu's gang did seem like they were straight out of "West Side Story" at first.) As much it has to do with crime, the movie is even more concerned with such important themes as loyalty and family which it explores with a great deal of thought. Plus, it has the perfect setting of slums in a post-war Japan that is still trying to fully recover from the war. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
