      Movie Info

Diana Prince lives quietly among mortals in the vibrant, sleek 1980s -- an era of excess driven by the pursuit of having it all. Though she's come into her full powers, she maintains a low profile by curating ancient artifacts, and only performing heroic acts incognito. But soon, Diana will have to muster all of her strength, wisdom and courage as she finds herself squaring off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility.

Well this movies reception really went all over the place didn't it? For me though, while it's not as good as the first one, it is still an enjoyable sequel that is a great stage for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. The morals of the film are a little wonky, and just the very nature of the conflict is a bit strange. The weird wishing stone artifact that the film surrounds itself on is confusing at best and all too often just plain silly. However, Pedro Pascal as the antagonist using the stone elevates the whole thing to a great level of fun. For the other villain, Kristen Wiig, she's pretty good. I would really have liked to see more of her in full Cheetah but she's pretty good. Then there's Chris Pine. I know they really wanted him back, and he's great in the movie, but the way he's brought back via bodily hijacking is just a bit too creepy and forced. But what really pulls the movie ahead above all else is, of course, Wonder Woman herself. Gal Gadot is still great. She has a stronger understanding of this world now, and it's nice to see her development. It's also just nice to see her kick ass, and this is a gorgeously directed movie with some pretty stellar action scenes. Nothing on par with the no man's land scene in the first one, but still, there is fun to be had here. And that's the biggest thing I can say with Wonder Woman 1984, there is fun to be had. The Cold War setting is unique, the action is good, and the performances are excellent. The core story, however, does have some issues, but not enough that these other factors can't elevate it. It's not a perfect sequel, but it's a good sequel.

Wonder Woman 1984 is not a good movie. Unfortunately. It's not that it's soul-crushingly bad, but it's just not good and it for one reason or another feels like it's completely mistaken silly for entertaining. Absurdity for ambition. There is a wealth of good intent imbued on the project as writer/director Patty Jenkins returns to continue crafting the titular character into more of a beacon of hope than ever, but come the end of this bloated two and half hour epic it's nearly impossible to see how anyone associated with the project could have mistaken it for quality rather than recognizing the bizarre (and often times extremely cheesy) choices that were made, not to mention the incredibly preposterous nature of it all. It's almost as if the film actively goes out of its way not to necessarily make its message more convoluted, but rather like it's trying to do or say more than what is actually on its mind. In other words, it's trying to make the simple idea at its center feel more complex and therefore more sophisticated when in reality said execution simply feels perplexing. The oddity that is this Wonder Woman sequel is difficult to describe as it's still somewhat mind-blowing that Jenkins along with co-writers Geoff Johns (a former executive at DC Entertainment and a prolific writer and producer) and Dave Callaham (seasoned franchise screenwriter) submitted this screenplay to Warner Brothers with the confidence not only that it would be approved, but that it was good while it's even more confounding that Warner greenlit this $200 million experiment. All of this is difficult to come to terms with as I very much am in the bag for excessively bombastic superhero films that have a distinct point of view and while Wonder Woman 1984 is most certainly excessive and most definitely carves out where it wants to stand in the pantheon of the genre none of what transpires on screen ever feels satisfying despite the virtue of what the film is trying to convey. Its a baffling misfire, an ill-conceived attempt at looking to the past in order to enlighten us about our future, but most of all it's disappointing. With the first Wonder Woman film three years ago Jenkins crafted an equally ambitious, but more balanced film that honed in on the titular character's optimism and slight naivety while utilizing the tangible and rather terrible world she entered as a way of highlighting those qualities. 2017's Wonder Woman found the right avenues to take in order to balance the many ambitions it hoped to accomplish with its story and characters whereas Wonder Woman 1984 crams in so many disparate ideas and goes so far out of its way in such ludicrous fashion in order to say what it wants to say that hardly any of it resonates. read the whole review at www.reviewsfromabed.com

WW84 has a poignant message and sincere themes but trite characters and tacky direction makes the whole package a little hard to swallow. Other than Pine's performance the whole ordeal felt rather charmless, a lot of the awe and wonder felt manufactured and many of the action sequences + special effects would have benefited from more polish... or simply better cinematography. It's a good enough film! Just could have been great if it knew how to work around the inherent cheesiness of its genre.

Let's see Diana salvage the crack-ravaged 80's neighborhoods of DC, not the shiny Georgetown supermalls, and then we'd really have one hell of a crimefighting extravaganza. Perhaps in the Snyder Cut. Overall, Wonder Woman has returned in radiant fashion. Gal Gadot has found her stride even more here; she is truly otherworldly and Patty Jenkins has doubled down on her symbolic heroism, in particular finding creative ways to utilize her iconic Lasso of Truth, leaving dropped jaws in her wake. With tighter, punchier writing, I truly believe Jenkins & Co. could've both compressed the pace and hit the story beats harder and more succinctly. Cheetah could've either been introduced earlier as a direct adversary or saved all together for the next installment to properly flesh out her contemptuous rivalry with Diana. I welcome Pedro Pascal's Max Lord as a "villain" who's not trying to blow up the planet, but is instead fueled by an inadequacy-driven desperation that unfortunately blows out of control; this is solid foil for Wonder Woman's compassion-driven heroism. The toxic, unbridled wish-fulfillment angle is right at home in the excess of the 80's and I'll take the internal conflict mined from it over yet another case of world-domination villainy anyday - even if the wrap-up is slightly muddled. 'WW84' plays more like a stand-alone adventure and not a linear expansion of Diana's arc from the first film (nor in the DCEU generally), which is not necessarily a bad thing, but she's certainly less directly tied to the narrative's momentum this time around. Thankfully, '84' continues to do Diana justice by nailing her representation. The peaks are spectacular and alone worth the price of admission, particularly the opening champion games and her discovery of flight. Number of times I cried? Four. And not over moments that you'd guess. It simply means a lot to me to see Wonder Woman on a movie screen once again in all her glory.
