You Should Have Left hints at a genuinely creepy experience, but never quite manages to distill its intriguing ingredients into a consistently satisfying whole.

Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) Right when this movie starts, the entire game is given away. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) The house is more interesting than the story itself. Jun 24, 2020 Full Review A.A. Dowd AV Club But the movie itself turns out to be a much shoddier bit of carpentry... it builds a ponderous Blumhouse haunted house-one whose "scares" are just hints of a secret the audience will figure out faster than intended. Rated: C Jun 22, 2020 Full Review Manuel São Bento MSB Reviews David Koepp's screenplay holds so many underdeveloped concepts and extremely superficial attempts at balancing distinct genres that it totally forgets to actually tell a convincing story with complete character arcs and interesting plot points. Rated: D+ Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Zoë Rose Bryant Loud and Clear Reviews You Should Have Left fails to incite fear of any kind, with a story that’s more sleep-inducing than scary, despite Kevin Bacon's best efforts in the lead role. Rated: 1/5 Sep 1, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The biggest draw is Kevin Bacon and even though this isn’t top quality material, it’s great to see him on screen again and he keeps us invested from start to finish. Leigh C Could have, should have, been so much better than it was. Tried to go in too many directions or something. Disappointing Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Despite mediocre reviews, I enjoyed the confusing cinematography of whether Kevin Bacons character was either stuck in a nightmare or reality and time continuously changed and shifted and altered the rooms and dimensions of the house. Metaphorically and physically implying his hell of living in a lie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Boring and you flng understand whats going on and its not even that scary Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Chad G I have no idea why the critics reviews are so low for this creepy and anxiety inducing movie. Hints of The Shining, The Secret Window and Poltergeist ripple through. Jean Baudrillard would like this flick, with it's copy of a copy, subtle simulacra style. From the start, I wasn't sure whether to call it a horror, psychological thriller or magical realism. It's pace coupled with quick nuanced scenes and sounds flitted and flowed well. The way it is written and directed left me zig zagging through the doors and hallways of dark, grey matter. What isn't to like about Americans staying in Wales in a weird and crooked house on a lonely hill!? Sequel please. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Elijia K Seeing the “professionals” at Rotten Tomatoes giving this gem a 40% overall rating is disappointing, to say the least. I threw this movie on expecting it to be another mid-tier thriller to end the night on, but was pleasantly surprised with an original and comprehensive story that left me captivated from start to finish. A truly unpredictable and mind-bending experience. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Joseph N Good pace and kept me interested. I think the low score it because the movie is hit or miss for most people. Love it or hate it kind of thing. I loved it and suspect it will be a sleeper classic in a decade.
