Nick F Young Guns Of Texas is notable for casting the offspring of three major Hollywood stars – Robert Mitchum, Joel McCrea and Alan Ladd. But while James Mitchum, Jody McCrea and Alana Ladd all turn in decent performances, this 1962 Western falls short due to its complex and often dull storyline. When a band of outlaws steal a consignment of Union Army gold, they are pursued through Apache territory by the brother of one of the outlaws, a couple of runaway lovers being pursued by the girl’s irate father and his ranch-hands, and a preacher, played by always reliable Chill Wills. There is eventually plenty of gunplay when the Apaches show up, but until then the cross-threaded and over-talkative plot – written by Harry Spalding - is seldom gripping and director Maury Dexter needed a much stronger touch. That said, the young trio of stars are impressive though despite supposedly being out on the sweaty dusty desert trail for days, all manage to look like they have just stepped out from the hairdressers.
