Dave S Volker Schlondorff made his feature film directorial debut with Young Torless in 1966. In the film, Basini, a young man at an Austrian military school, is caught by his classmates stealing money from another student. Without reporting the incident to their superiors, Basini is mentally and physically tormented by his classmates, including the analytical and emotionless Torless. The movie is about blind obedience and the fact that an individual condones evil and wrongdoing if that individual does nothing to challenge or acknowledge it. In Schlondorff's impressive debut, a character states "what seems so horrific, so incomprehensible from afar, simply happens. Quietly and naturally," clearly referencing Nazi Germany and the holocaust. In that context, it is a powerful experience and foreshadowed the arrival of Schlondorff's masterpiece The Tin Drum in the decade that followed.
