Joan Kenwood (Jane Russell) is a reporter grieving over her husband's death in World War II when she meets Lt. Jim Cameron (Louis Hayward). Cameron tries to win her over during a 72-hour pass, but Kenwood, still in mourning, rejects his advances. After Cameron saves a woman's life on the subway, Kenwood is impressed and sells the story to a newspaper, leading to a full-time job.
