Life is tough on the Lower East Side of New York City. But it's especially rocky for Morris Goldfish (Ricardo Cortez), a young man who dreams of wealth and luxury, despite the fact that he is the son of poor Jewish immigrants. On his quest to assimilate into New York's aristocracy, Morris hides his heritage from his new friends. He crushes his father, Julius (Jean Hersholt), by doing so, but is also able to help his family financially, and must weigh his cultural identity against monetary gain.
