When Coast Guard Adm. Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid) decides to move his family of eight children back to his old hometown, he encounters handbag designer Helen North (Rene Russo), an old flame from high school. Immediately, sparks fly between the two, and marriage is proposed. But Frank isn't the only one with kids to worry about -- Helen has a total of 10. Right away, the children have no intention of playing nicely, and together they decide to sabotage their parents' relationship.

Regardless of a distinct lack of romantic chemistry between Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo, the able-bodied actors fulfill the slapstick demands of this run-of-the-mill family comedy based on the 1968 movie with Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball.

The film is a remake of the 1968 Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball film adaptation of the personal memoir by Helen Beardsley. It updates the stereotypes of the children and parents from GI parents to Boomer parents and from Boomer kids to Millennial kids. It further reduces the film's story about managing a large blended family into a series of slapstick antics worthy of a farce. Frank's naval career is altered to the Coast Guard, emphasizing still his orderly nature, but dialling it up to the levels of making him the straight man who is routinely put through the wringer on every slapstick opportunity. Meanwhile Helen is made a more touchy-feely artistic type, whose comedy comes from her beliefs being portrayed as whacky. The resulting comedy is supposed to be about how his uptight nature and her loosey-goosey one balances each other out. It doesn't quite get there. Additionally most of the laugh out loud moments come from the kids ironically working together to break their parents apart.

Yours, Mine & Ours may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for those who enjoy a decently fun family film especially with premises that are akin to Cheaper by the Dozen, this 2000's remake offers a sweet, albeit quirky, take on the classic genre. Grading: C
