tony d It had a happy ending where they got together so why are people crying about it?...I believe it's because people expected Leslie Cheung's character was gonna end up with Anita Mui's character instead of Maggie's character...Now no disrespect to Anita but only just mentioning about her character there was no way that her character was gonna end up with Leslie's character because Anita's character was an ass and a bully to Leslie's character so there was no way that this was gonna happen...and Just because Anita's character had a change of heart by helping Leslie's character to help him get to and find Maggie's character at the end doesn't mean that Leslie should fall for Anita's character...I loved the end where you see Maggie and Leslie ended up being together where you see Anita's character alone and sad but hey she blew it and it was her fault for not being nice to Leslie's character in the first place. Now people moan about Maggie's character acting dramatic thinking whether she should or shouldn't be with Leslie's character but so what?...people are like this in reality by trying to think of the right decision to be with this particular person...and this movie is just like any other Asian romance movie where they can be dramatic too...but apart from their romance movies many other movies from Asia is Dramatic that's overrated...this had a better happier ending than ''In the Mood for Love'' that also starred Maggie Cheung. But yeah I liked it and it's one of Maggie's and Leslie's best romance movies for sure which is why that it had to get a Blu-ray release. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Audience Member As much as I adore the Leslie and Maggie pairing, I found the characters extremely frustrating. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Late-era Shaw Bros. production written by a young Gordon Chan and starring three of the stars who would help define the post-Shaw era, two of whom passed too soon. The writing has an episodic feel, with a lot of setup-punchline scenarios reminiscent of television comedy and the Hui brothers. There is a comic ghost scenario with Anita Mui spooking Leslie Cheung, which felt a little weird to laugh at. Even more hilariously inappropriate is a love scene with Leslie seducing Maggie Cheung poolside. This is followed by cutaways with a Hummel figurine of a leering Ben Franklin, the spinning balls of a clock, and a naked David statue sporting a sign that reads, "I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours" over its genitalia - a sign which promptly falls away. Although much of the comedy is improved in hindsight by knowledge of those involved and the presence of `80s fashion mishaps, the romance suffers due to the amount of distraction. The theme song is repeated ad nauseam, particularly in the falsely protracted ending. Still, there are many things to enjoy here for fans of HK film history and those involved. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member 1: It's a bit ridiculous that this is on Blu-Ray. Of all the great Chinese films out there, this is one of the select few chosen? Funny. It is definitely not made for foreign consumption. It's essentially a genre piece with the peculiar characteristics many less than spectacular Asian-made films share. The number of tacky western-style set pieces, clothing, customs, and styles are alarming. It's as if the filmmakers have tried to make one big advertisement for the new China. It probably seemed hip and fresh to Chinese audiences when it was first released; it seems anything but to this particular viewer. It is interesting to see Maggie Cheung and Leslie Cheung at such an early point in their careers though. Cheung is definitely one of those rather odd actresses that grew more beautiful over time. The film is interesting to view as a cultural artifact as well. It makes me think of the time I've spent in Beijing. I can see similarities between the two worlds and sense this was the obvious precursor to the current situation. Asian audiences seem to have a very different sense of what is acceptable in a contemporary film. There is obviously a large market for sappy and romantic pictures. This falls into that category in just about the worst sense. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
