Audience Member Madame Yuki is depressed. As portrayed by Michiyo Kagure, she is listless, barely interested in standing up for herself against her insensitive and bullying husband, and also not interested in pursuing an available alternate suitor. Perhaps this is because the end of WWII has brought an end to her family's standing (her father was a viscount according to the subtitles) and she can't cope as a commoner. Or perhaps it is just too much to bear seeing her husband flaunt his mistress in front of her (going so far as to install the "lady from Kyoto" as the person in charge of the inn that is now set up in Madame Yuki's ancestral home). But for some reason (possibly sexual, it is hinted) Yuki won't leave her husband. Eventually she alienates "the professor" who tried to help her leave. And eventually she succumbs to the deep depression. This is another "women's picture" from Kenji Mizoguchi who specialized in giving voice to their plight. This is one of his minor efforts, more puzzling than engaging, but it is beautifully filmed (is that lake Biwa?) and the ending resounds with sadness.
