r96 s 'Zaman - The Man from the Reeds' splits my thoughts. On the one hand, there isn't really enough plot here for a full length (albeit of the shorter variety) film and as such it never truly gets out of second gear. On the other hand, it is undeniably touching and the ending is poignant. Sami Kaftan's lead performance is pleasant, it's impossible not to care about his character and the family's predicament. None of the other actors get much time to shine, as you'd expect given the story, but Shada Salim does enough to stick out ever so slightly behind Kaftan. This narrowly gets a pass from me. The heart that is present throughout manages to keep it just about watchable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Audience Member A film as a document of a lost world. A lot of film material having been confiscated by the old Iraqi regime some of the very long boat tours may have their reason not in cinematographic choice but in the scarcity of what was left. I'm not convinced of the story at all - still the film has its moments of beauty. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member View of Iraq George and his cronies destryed it. A sad movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It too easy to dwell in feelings of sadness throughout this movie, at least it is for me, but I don't do that anymore hehe. Nonetheless, the beauty of the photography, the powerful images of Baghdad before the war, the mosque, the music and the limited but emotional dialogues, make of this movie a great work of art. Even if art is not your thing, just to see Baghdad before the war is so worth it, a Baghdad we will never see again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
