Sweet natured and gentle Japanese comedy, that never really hits the mark.

Anton Bitel Little White Lies Fujita adopts a dry, observational style reminiscent of Jacques Tati or Roy Andersson, making the madcap incidents and whimsical idiosyncrasies in his sketches seem all the funnier for being kept at such a cool distance May 7, 2009 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Picturesque in a slightly exaggerated, highly coloured comic-book style, the film is a little undercooked in terms of character and unpersuasive in its narrative. It's all quirks but no content of significance. Rated: 2/5 Nov 14, 2008 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The sweetness and good nature of this film won me over, after a slowish start. The leftfield vignettes and eccentric dialogue make for a taste that didn't take me long to acquire - and Arakawa in particular is a winning performer, in his goofy way. Rated: 3/5 Nov 14, 2008 Full Review David Jenkins Film4 This laconic artificially quirky debut from Japanese writer-director Fujita Yosuke settles for a rudimentary comic inspection of the dreary existence of a clutch of twentysomethings forced to reject their aspirations in order to face up to adult realities Rated: 2/6 Nov 14, 2008 Full Review Hannah Forbes Black Film4 A charming and funny tale of a bunch of sadsack losers piecing their lives together, Fine, Totally Fine combines slapstick and poignancy to create a gently beguiling romantic comedy. Rated: 4/5 Nov 14, 2008 Full Review Elliott Noble Sky Cinema Like a plate of cinematic sushi, writer-director Yosuke Fujita's debut is an off-the-menu mixture of crazy comedy and bland romance that won't satisfy everyone. But it's certainly worth a try. Rated: 3/5 Nov 14, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Touching and humorous film about the beauty of human relationships. None of us are "totally fine," but it's OK. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This quirky Japanese film was surprisingly funnier than was expected. And this was after I had already started watching the film. Knowing Japanese films are often a bit odd to North American audiences, I was expecting moments that would make me smile, but Fine, Totally Fine had moments that went that extra mile and had me laughing out loud. A beautiful colour pallette brings about an almost comic book esthetic to the visuals which helps ground the moments of absurdity into a coeherent and wonderful story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Piacevole, leggero e mai noioso, anche se un po' inconcludente. In ogni caso un'ottima scelta per riempire la serata. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't know what to say about this weird movie..... about dysfunctional people, in a rigid society.... interesting though and sort of funny. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute Japanese film. Story is a bit slight, but still enjoyable and amusing and I really liked the clutsy girl character (could totally relate to the coffee spilling, not being able to make up boxes ect. LOL). Also some nice scenery of Tokyo in it. Fans of Japanese comedy/romance should check it out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a subtle, almost surreal comedy that wanders along at a slow pace, punctuated with bits of low-brow humor to keep it alive. It's also an odd little romance and a root-for-the-losers character drama, but there's never any high drama, as the film never gets out of lazy Sunday afternoon mode. The comedy and romance are spices in the mix of everyday people turning thirty, going nowhere fast, who end up going from not so good to not so bad after all. When the humor is subtle or sad it's great, but not so good when it resorts to the juvenile, like when a booger flies across the room and lands in someone's eye. Comedy is tough and everyone has a style that suits them. I could have done without the more broad-based physical bits but they do serve a purpose as little alarms for those who don't appreciate two hours of deadpan, no matter how funny it is. The director demonstrates a good amount of skill in using editing for comic timing, and he was wise to cast YosiYosi Arakawa as the guy to do the heavy lifting when it comes to the ?Life?s more fun when you?re an idiot? bits. more: sitenoise at the movies: Fine, Totally Fine Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews
