LJ Schraner G Being critiqued highly by the professionals had my expectations outweighing my overall satisfaction. For one, it wasn't thrilling at all. I would describe it as a witty action/romance with a plot far more complicated than the way it was portrayed. I understand why it is both loved and hated, but more enjoyment may have been had if I streamed it with an open mind. Sarah Lancashire was superb and saved the ridiculous comedic portrayal of other characters, for what I thought was supposed to be a serious storyline. Black Doves is profoundly unconvincing form the outset. I couldn't get through the first episode. After a string of poorly filmed and edited scenes, we are supposed to be compelled by an exposition dump during a car ride that looks and sounds like a 90s video game. Production value is bottom tier here. It was near impossible to drag my mind from the piped-in Atari "engine noise" and shoddy background comping. Yuck. And when I did manage to process something from the dialogue, the reward was minimal. I can't recall the last time I was so disinterested in the outcome. I've seen gritty, compelling UK television, and this is not it. What I didn't expect but also got were: comedy, love story and Christmas in the background. I absolutely loved this: It was suspenseful from the very start, the actors were great, not only Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, but also the supporting cast, esp Sarah Lancashire (of Happy Valley fame) and Ella Lily Hyland - a discovery for me, her turn as crazy but funny assassin is excellent.
