You can go home again -- sort of. Bachelor Alex Cole finds himself living with his newly divorced sister in this Hulu original series. This time around, though, he and his sister are adults and they find themselves navigating the waters of the dating pool again -- all the while trying to raise Valerie's teenage daughter, who's also dipping her toes into the dating pool. Each one seems to have only casual relationships (hence the show's title): Valerie because she's newly divorced and trying to have fun; Alex because he's sort of a stereotypical bachelor who has yet to really grow up; and Laura, because she's a teenager. But the new living arrangement turns out to be a learning experience for everyone, punctuated, of course, by typical show devices (blind dates, one-night stands, parental visits, etc.) that lead to moments of hilarity, in between which nuggets of truth can be found. What to Know

Critics Consensus

Jason Reitman's Casual is a funny -- albeit very specific -- look at modern dating, sharpened by edgy dialogue and self-assured performances.

Eric Deggans NPR "Casual" slowly reveals unique characters searching for connection when the rhythms of modern life often alienate us. Nov 26, 2019 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail You watch and you're hooked. If, that is, you have an adult sensibility about life, love, family, friendship and figuring out that if your parents screwed up, it's up to you to make a better life. Apr 1, 2016 Full Review Margaret Lyons New York Magazine/Vulture There's just not quite enough happening, either in depth or in breadth or in originality or in hilarity or tragedy or musicality or in the dazzle department. Oct 30, 2015 Full Review Diane Gordon Mashable The smart, wry, bittersweet storytelling are a great vehicle to follow the characters as they try to find love and acceptance when human defense mechanisms and technology stand in the way. May 10, 2019 Full Review Alyssa Fikse Uproxx If Casual continues on its current track of sharp writing and believable characters, it's one to watch. May 10, 2019 Full Review Emily Chambers Pajiba It's smart and funny and nuanced. But it also feels like it's been done before, and, without some sort of novelty, the stellar performances will be wasted on an "also ran" show. May 10, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Surprising how these sometimes-lousy people grow on you! Terrific cast, fun watching the character- and performer-relationships develop. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Characters are not likable, or loveable. Very self absorbed, and joyless. Not great combo during a pandemic, hard pass. 😳 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Honestly, who watches and likes this garbage?? Annoying people, with conversations real people do not have, having sex multiple times in a 20 minute episode. Just throwing in lots of swearing and vulgar topics of conversation does not make it "real". People who enjoy this mindless drivel really need to get a life. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member LOVE this show , just watch it ! And be patient ?? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member At far as the current crop of TV sex comedies go, Casual is not as transgressive as Transparent, or as relentlessly hilarious as You're the Worst, but it's thoroughly solid, and has a great trio of leads. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show is so insipid. I can't believe it has such high ratings. Spoiled, irritating people crippled by upper middle class people problems. The daughter is insufferable. So is the uncle/brother. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
