What to Know

Critics Consensus

Citadel spares no expense but still feels underdeveloped, yielding a fairly fun spy caper that nonetheless creaks under the weight of its own exorbitance.

Brian Tallerico The Playlist Audiences for action movies are willing to suspend disbelief if the payoff is worth the cost, but “Citadel” never closes the sale. Rated: D May 17, 2023 Full Review Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express As one of the good guys, Stanley Tucci tries hard but is given no edge. Madden is a clean-cut, bloodless fella, who might be good to take home to mum, but as a dangerous spy? Oh please. May 11, 2023 Full Review Sophie Brookover New York Magazine/Vulture Espionage is built on an odd little paradox: Spies have no choice but to trust others while doing trust-ruining things to them. Rated: 3/5 May 5, 2023 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Citadel is not a perfect series. But it is a perfect foundation for something extremely entertaining and ambitious. It’s a big spectacle on the small screen that, for the most part, is as good as any blockbuster you’d see in theaters. Rated: 4/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Aidan Smith Scotsman Our man continues to look good in a well-tailored suit. No bum shots in the opening episode, but he’s constantly examining his chest scars from a previous life. All good fun. Jan 4, 2024 Full Review Gautam Sunder The Hindu As generic as they come, and not even the leads — or a scene-stealing Stanley Tucci — can keep us too engaged... dave b I knew it was going to be bad from the opening scene. 1. Trains don't speed thru the mountains. 2. The fire in the water after the crash looked like one of gas flames you see at hotels. Then there is the HQ in Utah. How do you hide a construction project of that size? How do you hide it from satellite overflights? Completely forgettable. But, I am sure Stanley was well paid. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review zazaza f it's soo fun with all the plot twist! can't wait for the next season!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Isis T So ive watched what seem to be this short series about twice already and i absolutely cannot get enough of it (in fact i actually just finished watch the season all over again) and it lead me to wondering…. When is the next season coming out its long over due ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Michael v As my love for James Bond and Bourne movies It’s just fun to watch kind of a 80 /90 vibe is story telling. Not every series can be like quality in writing as Jack Ryan or even Treadstone but they cancelend that show 😮‍💨 Quality always loses over ratings just sometimes enjoy what you get it’s a tv show Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/24 Full Review Matt J It's fine. Dialogue feels like it was written in another language then translated using an early AI engine. Everything in the show is predictable, Priyanka Chopra acts about as well as you would expect and Richard Madden phones it in. Stronger leads cast for something other than how they look might have been able to breath a little life into the pedestrian writing, but that's the show - It's purely about how it looks - you could watch the whole thing on Mute and understand what is going on. About 50% of the season is the writers desperately trying to make you care about the protagonists with a ham-fisted (and failed) attempt to manufacture chemistry between the protagonists. This isn't entirely the fault of the actors and writers, 6 episodes isn't enough to build anything like an attachment to such flat characters so you have to assume that Season 2 wasn't yet assured. Stanley Tucci plays Stanley Tucci as well and entertainingly as he does in every production, which always adds some enjoyment. One to watch over Saturday morning coffee while you are planning the rest of the day. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Jay W "Citadel" is an Amazon original spy show. The show is about the titular spy organization, so top secret that not even the spies that are in the organization are permitted to know about it. They're a world wide agency that does the types of jobs that are too dangerous for all the other spies. With a silly over the top premise like that, this series should be a lot of good ol' fashioned fun. And some of the times the series is. Other times, the series is way too complicated, convoluted and mellow dramatic. This show has a problem with tone. The Russo Brothers, directors of the good "Captain America" movies, are involved in the creation of this show. With Stanley Tucci and some well-timed jokes, the series at times feels like a self-aware, tongue in cheek parody of old spy clichés. A big part of the setup is that a character has to be a spy but does not remember any of his spy training. This is a funny set up and could lead to some "Get Smart" style jokes. But then the tone shifts to these dark tones of war crimes, mass murders and genocides. The action is well helmed. There is a sense of clarity. There is not an overabundance of shaky cam. I can always tell what is going on during a fight. But what it isn't clear is how much damage our heroes are taking. This is another one of those series that goes off the "Fast and Furious" rule set where our heroes are fully clothed in plot armor. If you have seen any given Jason Bourne, Mission: Impossible or James Bond movie, chances are you have seen this type of stuff before. This doesn't bring much new to the table. But chances are, if you have seen those types of movies and like them, you will like this as well. For a TV show, this is very impressive size and scale for its action, it legitimately feels like movie quality in a series. And what they do something legitimately interesting for the ending. So, if you're watching this show, wondering "what's the point?" I say, give it a chance, it has a compelling finish. If you want a spy action show with good action, some jokes, a whole ton of clichés and one cool twist to tie things off then this is the show for you. This show succeeds at exactly what it set out to do. Not done with honors but done just fine. Its mission was to make a competent spy show, and that mission was accomplished.
