When teenager Rob Piest goes missing in the Chicago area, the prime suspect is revealed to be an affable and well-liked local businessman named John Wayne Gacy. As officers tail, interrogate and eventually arrest Gacy, it becomes clear to the Des Plaines Police Department that the young man is just one of many who have disappeared at his hands. Lieutenant Joe Kozenczak and Detective Rafael Tovar lead the investigation that uncovers the remains of 32 young men and boys Gacy murdered, as well as the holes in the system that allowed Gacy to evade detection and capture for more than seven years. Meanwhile, a rivalry ensues between Gacy's lead defense lawyer, Sam Amirante, and the local prosecutor, William Kunkle, as the former tries to prevent Gacy's execution while the families attempt to understand how and why their sons were taken from them.

Melanie McFarland Salon.com Such a measured approach enables the real people still connected to the story to retain their humanity and dignity. Oct 31, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) You don’t witness the many murders of Gacy (Michael Chernus), but you get a sense of his victims and the immense pain left in Gacy’s wake. I appreciated the care and professionalism. Rated: 3/5 Oct 23, 2025 Full Review Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture Devil in Disguise doesn’t try to implicate its audience in the sport of watching true crime. Instead, it asks us to care about actual victims rather than abstract arguments of creative license, and it doesn’t disguise that compassion. Oct 20, 2025 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Designed to remind us that every person's life has value and worth protecting, and of what can happen when we don't. Rated: 3/5 Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Kate Sánchez But Why Tho? A Geek Community Wonderfully acted and grounded in every way that it can be, Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy sets a new standard for true crime series. Rated: 8.5/10 Oct 27, 2025 Full Review Alan French Sunshine State Cineplex With a very good, non-showy performance at the center, Devil in Disguise is far less scandalous than its Netflix counterparts. The willingness to engage with the harm done to the victims families also speaks to a frustrating part of the true crime genre. Rated: 8/10 Oct 24, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Michael B The story and acting was phenomenal. I cried when the Rob Piest story aired (on a later episode). At least we found out what happened to that poor kid. The young actor was amazing! All the victims names should be remembered. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Kashgar A Honestly one of the most harrowing and distressing things I’ve ever seen. Each episode takes time to honour and bring back to life one or more of the victims. Every actor does immense justice to their role. It actually hurts my heart to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/25 Full Review Avindu G It's often the shock and awe that attracts an audience to a true crime drama. And we are often introduced one or few criminally insane individuals who appears to be unearthly or abominable. But this series manifests itself into a more eye-opening account of how criminal the negligence and political favouritism was in creating this monster. How our societies have been failing to put basic welfare before personal gains is what turns out to be the real serial murderer at the conclusion of this documentary. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely riveting from the very first episode. Every actor involved so far (two episodes in) has been top tier. Thoroughly impressed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Seth W “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” attempts to peel back the layers of one of America’s most infamous serial killers, but instead finds itself tangled in its own shallow sensationalism. Rather than offering new insight or meaningful commentary, the documentary recycles the same disturbing details audiences have already seen in countless true crime specials only this time, with less empathy and even less purpose. The film’s tone wavers uncomfortably between macabre fascination and moral posturing. It wants to condemn Gacy’s monstrous acts, but can’t resist glorifying the darkness for shock value. The result is a grim, repetitive narrative that neither informs nor provokes. Interviews are poorly framed, pacing is inconsistent, and the archival footage feels like filler rather than foundation. Worst of all, Devil in Disguise fails to justify its own existence. In a genre already oversaturated with true crime exposés, this one adds nothing but noise exploiting tragedy for attention while mistaking horror for depth. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review April C Wow, everyone really knocked it out of the park on this one. Writing, acting, set design, direction... I'll forgive the occasional lapse of time period, it's hard to get that 100 percent and I'm just happy this got it 85. Michael Chernus, Marin Ireland, Gabriel Luna, and Augustus Prew... Just amazing work from all the actors but these four will stick with me. Loved the nod to the actual people and events at each episode's end. This shouldn't be something... Fun to watch... This is hard to explain, but I was actually really sad when this was over, I could've watched it forever and am considering starting it over. It's very satisfying regardless of subject matter. Some might consider shows like this to be a further glorification of Gacy, like his art continuing to be bought and sold, but this program is extremely respectful to the memories of the victims. I learned so much about them and their families. Does the show also actively try to make you root for Gacy? Maybe a little, but it does it with the soft inevitably of the truth.
