What to Know

Critics Consensus

Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura might be punching below their weight with Dope Thief's derivative story, but that doesn't stop them from making this thriller a riveting ride.

Chris Kelly Washington Post “Dope Thief” gets real by scratching below the surface of Philadelphia and its environs. Mar 18, 2025 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times The series is elevated by the two leads, whose lively rapport offsets the repetitive cycle of chases, shoot-outs and self-sabotage. Rated: 3/5 Mar 18, 2025 Full Review Roxana Hadadi New York Magazine/Vulture Dope Thief’s cast is so strong, and their handling of the series’ innate tonal conflict so masterful, that the pacing issues don’t overwhelm. Mar 17, 2025 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator What bothers me, slightly, is the jarring mix of very graphic violence with amiable, warm-hearted domestic comedy. Sure, it’s a strength of sorts, because the latter makes the former more bearable; but it’s also a weakness. Mar 27, 2025 Full Review Matthew Jackson Looper.com You'll come for the talent involved, and you'll stay because it makes you hang onto every single second of the action. Rated: 9/10 Mar 25, 2025 Full Review Ed Power Irish Times ...a methhead dramedy that lands like a chaotic mash-up of Breaking Bad and The Wire...while Dope Thief isn’t up there in terms of its dialogue or plot, it skates by on sheer charm and chutzpah and is worth investigating. Dakota S Great concept but moves too slow, seems like a lot of pointless plot points. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Hal G Good thriller that moves at the perfect pace, you can feel the tension as the days go on in the story, where everyone seems to be closing in and there are just too many things going on to manage. The only annoying thing is the "Manny" sidestory, I get that those writing for the show are trying to add more to juggle with all the issues that are piling on but his recurring issues, whining, crying, went just a bit overboard; They should have dialed it back by about 30%. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review D J This is a terrific show. As a person who grew up on the streets of the Bronx, NY, I can tell you the Director and actors got the street dialogues perfect. It's a great story and I will Binge ALL the Episodes this weekend. I actually knew and hung out with people just like this, and Believe it or Not, I am a Retired Federal Agent. Dr. Johnson Gozinya Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Neil J On the one hand this has the making of a credible thriller - impersonating DEA, things go wrong, different people involved, tension, different perspectives. However it also wants to be funny - witness some of the nonsense the two main characters indulge in, like Laurel and Hardy e.g. with the hand grenade in episode 4 - and this regularly undermines all the "thriller" side of things. Also, there seems to be an unbelievable love interest side story happening relating to the lawyer involved with the father in jail. Overall it's trying too hard to cover all bases which is pretty impossible to do. A shame. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Chris D Only 3 episodes in and I cannot get enough this show is a definite must see... Action packed will have you on the edge of your seat craving for more! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/25 Full Review Audience Member "Dope Thief" is a gritty, well-crafted crime drama that doesn’t waste time pulling you in.
