Critics Consensus

Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura might be punching below their weight with Dope Thief's derivative story, but that doesn't stop them from making this thriller a riveting ride.

Graeme Blundell The Australian Dope Thief is a cracker of a show, possessing a pulpy vitality, superb acting and diverting action sequences, and it is as astutely engineered as any series we’ve seen this year. Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Chris Kelly Washington Post “Dope Thief” gets real by scratching below the surface of Philadelphia and its environs. Mar 18, 2025 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times The series is elevated by the two leads, whose lively rapport offsets the repetitive cycle of chases, shoot-outs and self-sabotage. Rated: 3/5 Mar 18, 2025 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene “Dope Thief” alternates between high drama and some satiric comedy, not always making the transition gracefully. But Henry and Moura are weirdly compelling as two guys in way over their heads. Jun 3, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) As far as captivating crime dramas go, this is a wildly intense ride that should have you glued to your seat, shouting at the screen, pounding the cushions, and then bawling your eyes out. Rated: 4.5/5 Apr 23, 2025 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator What bothers me, slightly, is the jarring mix of very graphic violence with amiable, warm-hearted domestic comedy. Sure, it’s a strength of sorts, because the latter makes the former more bearable; but it’s also a weakness. Mar 27, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Sean M The Apple TV+ original offers two incredible performances from Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura, even if the execution of their surroundings is uneven. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/21/25 Full Review Stephen C 8 successful episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Kev T Gripping, gritty and suspenseful. The script, direction, acting, cinematography, this show has it all. I was hooked from episode 1 and they kept that interest locked right through until the ending. An excellent example of storytelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Avindu G Dope thief draws a vivid picture of the world where the sun hardly shine, where streets are littered with bones. But there's people living out there too in uncertainty and grasping to whatever they could. A story of heroes who gets handicapped when shot in the leg. A realistic story of friendship that's well casted and complemented with their energetic and flawless performances. A well written story with great visual and audio effects. Great cinematography and music. It's hard to come by stories that would bring out all emotions during it's run-time but Dope thief is one of those dramas that's capable of stealing many hearts. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/28/25 Full Review Carl G I signed up just to review this, after browsing reviews and feeling like people either like this show a lot -- or are really strangely unfair to it. This is definitely one of the best 10 or so shows of the past year and the people who attack it must be watching something else or expecting something much different. It may be that it's compared too much to the absolute TOP of this genre, like The Wire or The Sopranos -- and I agree it's not those. But how are new shows supposed to find their footing when people attack them for anything short of iconic perfection. The show is well-made with remarkably interesting characters. Its plotting is probably like a B overall. But the rest is an A, and even more so because it takes such unusual chances. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone, but only tell them that it's not straight action nor is it really Breaking Bad or those other comps. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Justin W SPOILERS: Dope Thief starts off promising, with gritty visuals and a solid setup — but then it completely falls apart like it was written on a napkin during detention. The plot makes zero sense. A drug boss sends his own guys to rob his own meth lab to "shake up" a DEA agent... who’s already working with him? Then his partner in the DEA launches a manhunt on the very guys they sent — and nobody ever just picks up the phone? It’s like a crime drama written by people who’ve never committed (or studied) a single logical thought. Characters change sides without reason, smart people make baffling decisions, and by the end, you’re not sure who’s conning who — or if the writers just conned us all. It does have some great acting by "Mina", "Manny" and "Ray". The real dopes are the writers, and they’re also the thieves — because they stole a show with real potential and turned it into a nonsensical mess.
