What to Know

Critics Consensus

Franklin's unhurried retelling of revolutionary history can be dry as parchment, but Michael Douglas' sly performance as the founding father gives it a compelling jolt.

Nina Metz Chicago Tribune I like that he [Douglas] plays him with an unfussy, modern approach, but this entire milieu is outside Douglas’ wheelhouse and his Franklin has no discernible personality. Rated: 2/4 Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Ben Travers indieWire “Franklin” comes across as an apathetic history lesson, too content in its embodiment of French decorum to be bothered explaining why audiences of any country should care. Rated: C- Apr 15, 2024 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com It’s a fairly flat rendition of an American in Paris that, unlike its subject, never quite catches a spark of lightning. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Carmen Paddock Movies We Texted About to Franklin’s immense credit, the well-known outcome never feels inevitable... The present is shaped by the tiny uncertainties of the past, and each compromise, consideration, and choice opens multitudes of possibilities and might-have-beens. May 21, 2024 Full Review Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media History fans may have mixed feelings about this history-themed docudrama and its rather uneven, but human, approach to Ben Franklin's work in Paris during the American Revolution. May 15, 2024 Full Review Martin Carr CBR Anyone looking for something unique will want to stream Franklin at the first opportunity, as not only will Douglas' performance earn him an Emmy -- Franklin is bound to pick up some behind-the-scenes Emmy recognition as well. yves s As a Frenchman who loves his history, the show has done a magnificent job of re-creation; the language and spirit are spot on—completely the opposite of Ridley Scott’s lamentable Napoleon, for instance. And the charm and personality that Douglas pointed out are remarkable. A perilous exercise brilliantly executed! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Ignacio S Accurate, but not much more. Michael Douglas fills the screen as Benjamin Franklin in a miniseries that, if it stands out for anything, it's as another clear example of Americans getting involved and openly mocking the French. Historically, I have no idea if the production intends to be faithful to history, nor do I know if it achieves this. Personally, that aspect didn't matter to me at all in this case. The story of the secondary characters only detracted from the overall work. If it weren't for Michael Douglas, this would be a fail, but he alone is capable of saving the entire production. Another run-of-the-mill miniseries that I wouldn't recommend in a conversation unless someone happens to be looking for something specific about Benjamin Franklin. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/24/24 Full Review Allan M Like many, I though Douglas' portrayal of Franklin was off. It seemed like he was just reading his lines and not acting. As for the show, the digressions into Temple's life were pretty much unnecessary as there was so much other historical material work with. I would only recommend this series to someone that watches a lot of TV and sorely in need of a show to kill a few nights with. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/30/24 Full Review Rebecca T I’m gonna start with I LOVE slow moving period pieces. Take me out of this present timezone, please. Franklin did that, and I learned a few things along the way. A great story, loved the slow pace, acting was great, language authenticity was refreshing. With that said, some of the one-too-many campy scenes were not to my taste (I’m a fan of a more subtle approach). In this regard 2024 came roaring thru, as films need to show immorality in order to be made (I get it, France had its decadent side; can you allude to it please vs let’s show everything? Guess not). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review John W This was a huge disappointment. I like Michael Douglas and he couldn't generate any personality for Franklin. Given the extravagance of Franklin's personality, that is hard to understand. the French actors were excellent. But the English speaking was just plain weak. The story itself is fascinating enough that I finished the episodes. But I finished in spite of the acting, not because of it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review Bruce H I thought "Franklin" was a solid effort that had a great deal of the history right and did not pander to the audience. I thought it showed respect for the sophistication of the French characters and the subtitles did not bother me at all. Good job, Michael. Good job, everybody.
