The reign of House Targaryen begins with this prequel to popular HBO series "Game of Thrones;" based on George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood," "House of the Dragon" is set nearly 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones," telling the story of the Targaryen civil war with King Viserys I Targaryen's children battling for control of the Iron Throne.

Covering an era of tenuous peace with ferocious -- albeit abbreviated -- focus, House of the Dragon is an impressive prequel that exemplifies the court intrigue that distinguished its predecessor.

Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) A whole season in, I’m still struggling to remember which ones are Aegon, Aemond, Daemon or Everybody Loves Raemon. Jun 21, 2024 Full Review Kyle Chayka The New Yorker Against the odds, HBO showrunners made more than reheated Game of Thrones leftovers. Dec 8, 2022 Full Review Alison Herman The Ringer The first season of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel was largely a success, but compressing years of conflict into 10 hours of television leaves us with vague outlines rather than cohesive characters. Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Joshua Polanski the post calvin Even visually, while more stylistically contained, the first season felt as impressive as the Battle of the Bastards or the Alan Taylor–directed episodes in the early seasons. Rated: 4/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net If this keeps up, House of the Dragon may become something even grander than Game of Thrones. A vast political epic about dynasties that, in crafting such believable fantasy, rivals the richness of Tolkien. Rated: 5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut It’s a fine series in its own right, delivering all the political machinations, gore, depravity, and royal plotting that the franchise is known for in spades. Eileen D It's Bridgerton with Dragons! If you are expecting GoT action, you will be disappointed. If you go in knowing it's a Dragon-laden soap opera, it's far more enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review David B Not convincing. The acting and writing don't allow the characters to really come alive. At times, the CGI looks cheap. We keep getting told that Matt Smith's character is evil but we're hardly shown it. He seems flat, and the others too. It's just not the same as Game of Thrones Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Yash A Like game of thrones always Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review J R George R.R. Martin does it again! House of the Dragon Season 1 is another captivating entry into the world of Thrones, delivering an intricate and enthralling story that pulls you back into the brutal, power-hungry halls of Westeros. The characters are exceptional, with each one bringing layers of complexity, ambition, and moral ambiguity that define Martin’s work. Add to that a gripping story of political intrigue and family drama, and you’ve got a show that stands shoulder to shoulder with Game of Thrones at its best. And then there are the dragons—powerful, majestic, and terrifying. For the first time, we get to witness actual dragon battles that are every bit as epic and destructive as we imagined. These moments are jaw-dropping and add an entirely new dimension to the battles in Westeros. One of the things I absolutely love is how the show preserves the music and tone of Game of Thrones. The intro sequence, while different, pays homage to the original with a similar structure and style, seamlessly immersing viewers back into the world of Westeros. The familiar music cues and the dark, atmospheric cinematography ensure that this feels like an authentic return to the world we fell in love with. This consistency is something that many spin-offs in other franchises, like Star Wars, have struggled to achieve. By maintaining the tone, style, and essence of the original, House of the Dragon feels like a true extension of the Game of Thrones universe rather than a disconnected offshoot. Overall, House of the Dragon Season 1 is a triumph. It’s a story of ambition, betrayal, and power—set against the backdrop of a Westeros that’s both familiar and new. If the rest of the series keeps up this level of quality, it’s destined to become another classic in the world of TV epics. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Amanda K Ohhh the acting of the lead women- not the best & then they changed actors half way through & the continuity of the roles were lost. So many missed opportunities to strengthen the storyline whilst covering 170 years… Im underwhelmed… sad & disappointing after (before) GoT!!
