Martin's "Fire & Blood," "House of the Dragon" is set nearly 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones," telling the story of the Targaryen civil war with King Viserys I Targaryen's children battling for control of the Iron Throne.

Critics Consensus

Covering an era of tenuous peace with ferocious -- albeit abbreviated -- focus, House of the Dragon is an impressive prequel that exemplifies the court intrigue that distinguished its predecessor.

A whole season in, I’m still struggling to remember which ones are Aegon, Aemond, Daemon or Everybody Loves Raemon. Go to Full Review

Against the odds, HBO showrunners made more than reheated Game of Thrones leftovers. Go to Full Review

The first season of the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel was largely a success, but compressing years of conflict into 10 hours of television leaves us with vague outlines rather than cohesive characters. Go to Full Review

Even visually, while more stylistically contained, the first season felt as impressive as the Battle of the Bastards or the Alan Taylor–directed episodes in the early seasons. Go to Full Review

If this keeps up, House of the Dragon may become something even grander than Game of Thrones. A vast political epic about dynasties that, in crafting such believable fantasy, rivals the richness of Tolkien. Go to Full Review

It’s a fine series in its own right, delivering all the political machinations, gore, depravity, and royal plotting that the franchise is known for in spades. Go to Full Review

Travis T @RT34844359 4d House of the Dragon is a visually spectacular prequel delivering an epic Targaryen saga of political intrigue, betrayal, and drama for GoT fans. Yet it's very fast paced with time jumps, hard to follow unless you have a great memory and really pay close attention. The dense cast, similar-sounding names, and layered lore often require multiple rewatches or extra study to fully grasp alliances, motivations, and history. Unlike Game of Thrones, which felt instantly accessible and binge-worthy, the performances here are outstanding with strong emotional depth in the power struggles. Still, it lacks that compulsive next-episode urge, turning it into more of a committed obligation than a page-turner—though the quality keeps me watching. Rewarding for dedicated fans with its impressive scope and production values, but it may test the patience of casual viewers seeking easier escapism. See more Salma A @RT08531056 5d HBO has produced some of the most talked-about shows in television history, but let's be honest about something that is often ignored — many of these shows are packed with graphic sex scenes that go far beyond what the story actually needs. When every episode includes long, explicit scenes, you stop focusing on the real story, and the writing, the characters, and the deeper meaning all get buried. There is also a clear pattern with HBO: they push this kind of content in front of the viewer not because the story demands it, but as a way to grab attention and drive subscriptions. That is a business decision, not a creative one. A truly great show does not need shock to make an impact — emotion, tension, and strong characters are what stay with people. So if a show cannot tell its story without covering it in explicit scenes, maybe the story was not strong enough to begin with. Your time and attention are worth more than that. See more Johannes S @RT64416087 May 27 Wow, it's actually very good! I feel like they continued the world building of GoT pretty well. Lots of political scheming and shifting alliances. The lead characters are cast absolutely spot on and dominate every scene they're in, namely Viserys, Daemon and Otto, older Rhaenyra and older Alicent. See more Jay D @Jaydegnl May 21 Almost as good as GOT, good acting and very amusing. Personally I really think Ewan Mitchell has a very annoying face and that spoils it a little for me. He reminds me of José Jalepeño. Sometimes it is also a little to woke. Coloured Targarians? It is as natural as a white Masai fighter, so just don't alter characters out of political correctness. See more Tyler N @RT33166214 Apr 16 Awesome show! The first 30 minutes of the first episode were boring and confusing and I thought I had made a mistake. You might too. But I’m glad I fought through because the rest was amazing. The interesting thing about this show is that, just like GOT, when you think you know what’s going to happen, that’s not what happens. And even though it’s fiction, the events unfold in a very realistic manner and not Hollywood-like at all. The characters are mostly consistent but some seem to change a little over the course of the show. Perhaps it’s emotion. But overall, still an amazing journey. And what an intense ending. I don’t think it’s as good as GOT, but it’s not that far behind. It’s just a little more realistic-like (minus dragons) than entertainment-based while still being highly entertaining—if that makes sense. It is a much better prequel to GOT than Better Call Saul was to Breaking Bad. See more Thomas B @Daboosa Mar 31 Great show, reviving one of my favourite shows of all time.
