Author Tom Clancy introduced the character of Jack Ryan in a series of books before Ryan headed to the big screen in several films. Now the former U.S. Marine is featured in an episodic series for the first time, with John Krasinski portraying Ryan in this Amazon original thriller that centers on Ryan as an up-and-coming CIA analyst. He is thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time and uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication. That launches him into the middle of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale.

Though not as thematically rich as some of its geopolitical predecessors, Jack Ryan is a satisfying addition to the genre buoyed by exceptional action sequences and a likable cast.

Kelly Lawler USA Today John Krasinski, stepping far away from his role as Jim on The Office, does a serviceable interpretation of the famous Clancy character in this espionage thriller, which mixes its action with solid character work. Nov 10, 2021 Full Review Karen Han Vox Jack Ryan is most successful when it shifts attention away from its star. Rated: 3/5 Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR Still, Amazon's Jack Ryan succeeds by spinning a suspenseful, big budget adventure around terrorism around the blandness hero in the business. Aug 31, 2018 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal A sturdy if familiar reimagining of Tom Clancy's signature character for contemporary times. Rated: 3.5/5 May 1, 2024 Full Review Fausto Ponce Alta Fidelidad Magazine Spectacular, addictive and at times moving, because it not only depicts our heroes' fragility and complexity, but also takes the time to show us the human side of the villains in turn, without justifying their actions. [Full review in Spanish] Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Vincent Schilling Indian Country Today John Krasinski does an exceptional job portraying Jack Ryan in a believable way. The Jack Ryan series is engaging as an espionage thriller should and must be. Absolutely binge-worthy. Rated: 8/10 Nov 28, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

LUIS LETACIO C Eu gostei muito do ritmo da série, assisti do começo ao final quase no mesmo dia. Muito boa para maratonas de ação e investigação. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/24 Full Review Jay W In this day and age, we have no shortage of shows like these. Stuff like "Reacher", "Shooter", "Taken", "Punisher" and "Terminal List" all roughly scratch the same itch for a grounded gun guy vs government goons TV series. It becomes increasingly difficult to stand out when the series is based on books written roughly 30 years ago. I mean Tom Clancy has been dead for 10 years now. That might explain why so many of his stories involve some spark that will make the Cold War escalate to World War III between America and Russia. Most of Clancy's material has been mined in other films and even video games that anything now seems derivative. Similar to Jane Austen with romantic comedies, so it is with Clancy and political thrillers. Well then, the difference has to come from the character. What makes Jack Ryan different than Jack Bauer? What made him a charming protagonist was the fact that he didn't have, as Bryan Mills would say, "a particular set of skills." Ryan is an analyst, a desk jockey. He was the everyman thrown into difficult situations outside his control. I feel that edge is where "Jack Ryan" misses the mark. This Jack Ryan, particularly by the third season, is just the same type of action tough guy as every other political thriller show. It's not bad, just every change they make to Jack Ryan makes him more generic. They are making him out to be more like John Karasinki's character from "16 Hours". That being said, they do an excellent job with the action in this show. The music, cinematography and acting are all top-notch. The political intrigue and stories are well done. I just wish it would appeal more to the everyman angle that makes Jack Ryan so unique. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Sallie S The critics who gave this series a bad review did not give it full credit for the extraordinarily respectful and empathetic portrayal of the Arab characters, fully developing them as three-dimensional personalities with flaws, sins, and and, yes, virtues. Granted, the Americans are less interesting, but so what? The American characters must be there for contrast. And their moral dilemmas do have weight. The writers and the director should be honored for an honorable effort rare in movies and TV. (This show puts the cheap, shallow "Lioness" series to shame.) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/20/24 Full Review Stephen H Really good show. Really enjoyed it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review M7AMD A first season is still the best one so far Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/20/24 Full Review Dave C Great casting choices, solid writing, and some great action sequences make this a really enjoyable watch. Having seen the canon of 'Ryan' films so many times, it is also good to be able to pick out some story points as well as have an understanding of some of the character dynamics Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
