John Doyle Globe and Mail In what is a slow-moving, Stygian and enigmatic eight-part series (Icelandic with English subtitles) there's a beguiling mystery about heartbreak. Jul 6, 2021 Full Review Aaron Phillips But Why Tho? A Geek Community Katla struggles to find its direction in the beginning of the show, once it gets going, it’s an incredibly intense and psychological mystery. Rated: 7/10 Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Erick Estrada Cinegarage Harsh, grown-up, grim without the need to be graphic. [Full review in Spanish] Jul 21, 2022 Full Review Mikel Zorrilla Espinof It could have compressed everything into fewer chapters, but it is also a work that arouses a certain curiosity from the start and gradually expands the universe it poses to become more and more interesting. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 23, 2021 Full Review Peg Aloi Arts Fuse In the confident hands of this filmmaker, the powerful narrative unfolds with striking simplicity and intensity. Aug 23, 2021 Full Review Paul Tassi Forbes Katla ended up going places I wasn't expecting past this initial premise, and managed to be a rather touching exploration of grief, loss and regret, albeit in a way that moves a bit... slowly at times. Ken D This is an intriguing and suspenseful series. I am enjoying the story as it unfolds. However, this probably could have been made in fewer episodes, as there are (a) too many pregnant pauses in the character’s dialogue, (b) too many scenes that do not move the plot forward. Also, and I’m at E4 as I write this, none of the affected characters pose pertinent questions to the ‘survivors’, which is annoying and just not plausible. Even the paranormal is never suggested, yet it is a credible possibility. While I understand the need for the writer to delay explanation until towards the end, making characters less than normal or real is a device used in poor writing and poorly constructed plots. UPDATE Frustrated by (a) and (b) above, I skipped to the end to find that the plot's premise is flawed. An unnecessary level of complication to solve each character’s grief or issue just doesn't work. It turns out to be a fantasy story dressed up as a suspenseful thriller that is as depressing to watch as the Icelandic ash-covered scenery. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/10/25 Full Review Koen H Really interesting show with lots of depth. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/06/25 Full Review Matias H Katla is an intensiv psychological tv-series with such plot twists that give you shivers and chills in many turns. It has in-depth believable characters that are also growing during this epic saga that opens Islantic myths and old tales. Overall feeling is really mysterious and unpredictable with excellent acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Patrick R 👍✔❤🎉👍👌 ... A truly, finally, well-made series... perfect in its intention, meaning it expertly and homogeneously blends: 1) - Depth of existentialist reflections 2) - A surreal plot with incredible consistency 3) - Incredibly original, delicate, and profound aesthetics all at once. ... 200% Satisfied! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review roy t The series is okayish but definitely not great if you're trying to avoid going into a full blown depression. The doubling up starts to become rather too predictable. I always used to want to visit Iceland but much of it looks like a total hell-hole in this series, that's just apart from the awful weather which I couldn't believe was their version of summer! So I've changed my mind in that respect. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/04/25 Full Review Fritz L It starts and continues slowly, allowing the viewer to nurture a full range of sentiments, thoughts and unanswered questions. In the last episodes the depth of the involvements gets deeper and deeper, possibly raising a lot of personal echoes. A great series, definitely worth seeing, but with some truly hard scenes.
