      Critics Consensus

Patrick Melrose is a scathing indictment of British high society's inherited dysfunction, cruelty, and the wealth that enables them. The Crown this ain't.

Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Benedict Cumberbatch gives the performance of his career in this cruelly compelling 2018 limited series. Jan 5, 2021 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) [Benedict Cumberbatch] runs the gamut: cool, acerbic, brittle, erratic, self-destructive, needy and fragile. Mar 8, 2019 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Patrick Melrose [is] a highly satisfying adaptation of five semi-autobiographical novels by Edward St. Aubyn. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Diego Jemio Clarín English actor Benedict Cumberbatch portrays that tortured soul [Patrick Melrose] wonderfully. [Full review in Spanish] May 14, 2019 Full Review Keith Watson Metro Newspaper (UK) Cumberbatch is so alarmingly convincing in a wide range of drug-bonkers states - mind or body in meltdown, sometimes the two together - that you find yourself hoping against hope that he's not method acting. Nathan H By turns hilarious and devestating character portrait exploring generational trauma, the cycle of addiction, and the emptiness of decadence, with spot-on charicatures, all rendered with beautiful cinemetography and extremely committed performances. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/24 Full Review Kasso M At times hysterically funny, at others emotionally devastating. Terribly underrated and under-appreciated. Not many shows cover such dark topics, and Cumberbatch handles them with expert skill. Maybe his best performance, so convincing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/23 Full Review Carl F Top class series and performances. Grown up TV . Portrays the impact of sexual abuse with true insight. Excellent and riveting throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review dario l Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't quite understand why the audience rating is what it is for this series. Ordinarily, I would think 5 episodes is a bit shy of being able to sink one's teeth into a story. But this series was incredibly well done holding one's attention even during deep character dives. Well worth anybody's time if they have even a small appreciation for bold writing and engrossing directing. My first introduction to Cumberbatch and I was quite impressed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Carole G Brilliant in all regards. A terrifying portrait of a monstrous kind of person.
