After a colleague suffers a near-fatal heart attack, Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison takes over an investigation into the murder of Delia Mornay, a young prostitute. The case is challenging enough in its own right, since Jane quickly determines that there is very little tangible evidence against the main suspect, an ex-convict. Worse, however, she suspects there is a cover-up going on in her department, where her male team of investigators isn't making a secret of their displeasure to be working for a woman. After a second body is discovered, what started as a single murder inquiry turns into an investigation stretching back over 10 years, forcing Jane to devote every waking hour to the case and taking a toll on her home life with her recently divorced live-in lover, Peter Rawlins.

Ted B 4.5 stars; this was so much more than a pure detective series. This 15-year, 7-season series was a character study. They could not have picked a better character actor than Helen Mirren. The series had its ups and downs, but Ms. Mirren was consistently superb. That she would take the mediocre requirements of a TV series and consistently give an Academy Award-worthy performance says all you need to know about her—the consummate professional. The show was well-written, but that only goes so far unless you have an outstanding actress to carry it. Season 7 may have had the greatest demands on her talents, as her character is caught up in a downward spiral of her life with no one there to save her. She has to save herself. What a fitting end to a series that set the bar for excellence in TV detective series 20+ years ago.
