      Critics Consensus

Queen Cleopatra may posit some fresh speculation about the ubiquitous monarch, but its glossy presentation errs more towards a superficial toga party than a substantive endeavor.

Leila Latif Guardian It’s a deliciously fun drama weighed down by the self-serious need to educate. Rated: 3/5 May 24, 2023 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com While I still wouldn't call it extraordinary from a production standpoint, it is worth digesting in ways people easily incensed by its Blackness would never countenance. May 18, 2023 Full Review Camilla Long Times (UK) It is patchy sub-Game of Thrones cosplay interwoven with academics you’ve never heard of. May 15, 2023 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Queen Cleopatra was probably aiming for the Blood, Sex and Royalty vibe, but fell somewhere between the two stools of self-important and sassy. Aug 27, 2023 Full Review Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice The series distorts history by inserting unnecessary drama to make a point about race. Creators could have easily removed the historians and just made a fictional account of Cleopatra that would have satisfied this agenda and told a better story. Jul 7, 2023 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media The best parts of Queen Cleopatra are when academics appear on the screen to explain incidents in Cleopatra's life (which is unusual, because that's sometimes when the life goes out of a documentary). Azizkhuja T Netflix's miniseries "Queen Cleopatra" attempts to delve into the complex history of one of Egypt's most iconic figures, Cleopatra VII of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a ruler of Macedonian descent who governed Egypt from 51 BC until her tragic demise in 30 BC. Despite the rich historical tapestry at its disposal, the series tragically misses the mark on nearly all fronts, offering an experience that is both underwhelming and disorienting. First and foremost, the series suffers from a profound deficiency in quality acting and production values. The performances across the board are lackluster and fail to convey the depth or the gravitas of the historical figures they represent. This is compounded by production choices that leave much to be desired, rendering the whole experience as jarringly inauthentic and cheap. One would expect a documentary or docudrama to enlighten and educate, intertwining entertainment with factual accuracy and insightful analysis. However, "Queen Cleopatra" falls short of these basic criteria. The narrative feels disjointed, and the portrayal of Cleopatra herself is so far removed from historical accounts that it's hard to reconcile the series' character with the storied queen known from antiquity. A glaring issue with the series is its apparent lack of consultation with or input from historical experts. The few insights that are provided come off as dubious at best, stripping away any semblance of educational value. Instead of a vivid reenactment of Cleopatra's fascinating life and her political acumen, viewers are subjected to a rendition that is as dull as it is uninspiring. In what could have been a thrilling and illuminating exploration of Cleopatra's reign—highlighting her diplomatic skills, her strategic marriages to Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, and her efforts to defend Egypt from Roman imperial ambitions—the series instead opts for a monotonous and unengaging presentation. This not only does a disservice to Cleopatra's legacy but also to the audience, who are denied a genuinely compelling insight into one of history's most intriguing figures. Spending a few hours on a lackluster production such as "Queen Cleopatra" on a dreary Sunday evening proved to be an exercise in futility. The series is a testament to a squandered opportunity to revitalize the narrative of an ancient queen whose life was marked by drama, intelligence, and resilience. Potential viewers would be well-advised to steer clear of this disappointingly inadequate portrayal and seek out more accurate and engaging resources to appreciate the true story of Cleopatra VII. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Chris W Delusional wishfully thinking was obviously the driving force behind this production. If this is a documentary about Cleopatra, Iron-Man is a documentary about Elon Musk. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jacob L Bad writing, bad acting, historically incorrect Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review mndln The series claims to be historical, although it denies all historical data. Magic! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Maria C A wholly inaccurate portrayal of Cleopatra. This is categorically not a documentary. Rather, it is a production of deluded fantasy from the directors. Concrete fact; Cleopatra's origins trace back to the Ptolemaic dynasty, a Macedonian Greek royal family. Shame on you Netflix for not overseeing the content of your broadcast; highly misleading for younger viewers or indeed, anyone who is not adept with history.
