What to Know

Critics Consensus

Queen Cleopatra may posit some fresh speculation about the ubiquitous monarch, but its glossy presentation errs more towards a superficial toga party than a substantive endeavor.

Leila Latif Guardian It’s a deliciously fun drama weighed down by the self-serious need to educate. Rated: 3/5 May 24, 2023 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com While I still wouldn't call it extraordinary from a production standpoint, it is worth digesting in ways people easily incensed by its Blackness would never countenance. May 18, 2023 Full Review Camilla Long Times (UK) It is patchy sub-Game of Thrones cosplay interwoven with academics you’ve never heard of. May 15, 2023 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu Queen Cleopatra was probably aiming for the Blood, Sex and Royalty vibe, but fell somewhere between the two stools of self-important and sassy. Aug 27, 2023 Full Review Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice The series distorts history by inserting unnecessary drama to make a point about race. Creators could have easily removed the historians and just made a fictional account of Cleopatra that would have satisfied this agenda and told a better story. Jul 7, 2023 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media The best parts of Queen Cleopatra are when academics appear on the screen to explain incidents in Cleopatra's life (which is unusual, because that's sometimes when the life goes out of a documentary). Audience Member its real bad, and not corect at all Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Audience Member I thought it was great. It’s clear that the people telling the story are elaborating on what they feel probably fueled a lot of the events or actions that took place during that time. I’m sure there is not a lot of clear or precise information since it was B.C.. Furthermore, no one is going to know all the facts or intensions of anyone unless you’re God himself. It made me want to do a little more research of my own on because it is very factual that growing up in the US you’re only going to hear about white history, an altered or “white-washed” version as the professor mentioned in the documentary. There was some factual information I learned from watching that was never mentioned whenever hearing about Cleopatra. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Rafael C I created an account on Rotten Tomatoes just to post a review for this series. I gave it my full, unbiased attention, but by the end, I completely understand why this has one of the lowest ratings on RT. Forget about historical accuracy—it’s clear this is a revisionist take. But even beyond that, the production quality was underwhelming. What bothered me the most, though, was the storytelling approach. It feels like the show is saying, 'Forget everything you’ve learned in school or from factual documentaries—this is the real truth.' It’s almost as if it’s trying to rewrite history. The portrayal of Cleopatra was also frustrating, as it seems to fit into the modern feminist "strong, independent woman" mold rather than an authentic, nuanced portrayal of the queen. I honestly feel cheated for the time I’ll never get back." Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review Phillip D This is supposed to be a documentary yet is full of inaccuracies and racial politics. I’m unsure if it was made to rage bait but it insists that the Macedonian queen was black and every painting historical account was wrong and the Greek kingdom of Egypt was a black enlightened Mecca. I do not recommend this at all worst documentary I have ever seen Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Stronger E Rewriting history with a lot Misinformation about Cleopatra. It was very hard to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Péter B Worts show I ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
