Bathed in opulent black and white with a reptilian Andrew Scott holding the screen hostage, Steven Zaillian's sumptuous reinterpretation of Ripley draws fresh blood from Patricia Highsmith's insidious social climber.

Peter Travers ABC News Andrew Scott excels as a ccn man who makes life hell for Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn in Steve Zaillian’s partly exhilarating, partly exasperating slow burn of a series (it’s eight hours) that builds tremendous suspense as evil rots in the Italian sun. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) It’s a thoroughly entertaining game. If not a little unsettling. Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) There are many reasons to watch this exquisite neo-noir thriller, but it’s worth highlighting just how remarkable Andrew Scott’s performance is as Tom Ripley. Apr 18, 2024 Full Review Carlos Bonfil La Jornada ...a miniseries that stands out for its original and daring take on a suspense saga that still retains a surprisingly vital energy today. Emerald E I honestly cannot believe I watched this whole series. I would rather watch paint dry next time. So so so boring. I hated every second of it. The best part of it was finishing it and knowing I’ll never have to watch that yawn fest again 0 stars Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Troy R Andrew Scott does a great job with the role, being both an absolutely villain at times and others a proper gentleman. The story is interesting and moves at a fast enough pace to help avoid any stale moments. It is hard to say who you should be rooting for in the show, but as you try to decide that you wonder what the creator thinks about that as well, worrying that each slip up will be the end of Tom. Ending was really good, as well as the extra ending. Was an interesting step into a time before today where dna/fingerprints/camera/etc. were not there to help solve a crime. And it showed how one dedicated detective could try to piece the puzzle together, while other police were accepting of the limitations of the time. The black and white was an interesting take. At first it kind of felt like an overly artsy decision to do, but as the show progressed it used the black and white in ways that made the choice worth not seeing the beautiful colorful Italian scenes. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/27/25 Full Review Stoner J It worked a lot better as a 2hr movie and not an over bloated nearly 8 hour series. It should have been done in half that. Every episode could cut 15 minutes at least if they didn’t film Riley walking and walking and walking all episode every episode and many many drawn out scenes that were unnecessary. The movie was more intense too and had a more believable cast. Overall this is a good series though, not great Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review A. S This may be the most perfect series I've ever seen! The cinematography was stunning, to say the least. It was filmed in black and white, which I normally don't like, but was exactly right, in this case. This time, the backdrop for each scene was not nature, but ancient Italian cities, statues and art. The story and acting were excellent and mesmerizing. It was so much better than the movie, "The Talented Mr. Ripley", which I really liked, but then you can do so much more in an eight-hour series than you can in a two-hour movie. Don't miss this one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review BRizz 2 TV Review: Ripley (Netflix, 2024) Based on the novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” by Patricia Highsmith Netflix’s Ripley is a stylish, slow-burn psychological thriller that expands on the world introduced in The Talented Mr. Ripley, transforming the iconic story into an eight-episode black-and-white television series. With each episode running close to an hour, it’s like watching an eight-hour art-house film — one that trades in tension, atmosphere, and deep character study. If you’re familiar with the 1999 film starring Matt Damon, you already know the core plot: a man named Tom Ripley becomes entangled in a dangerous web of lies, manipulation, and murder. The film was fantastic, and this series builds on that, offering more layers to the story and giving space to explore Ripley’s descent in slow, deliberate steps. Now, here’s the thing: while I can recognize the quality of the series — from its stunning cinematography to the hauntingly quiet pacing — it just wasn’t fully my cup of tea. The black-and-white aesthetic is bold and beautifully done, reminiscent of classic Hitchcock. But I personally lean more toward colorful, fast-paced, emotionally brighter stories. This one is cold, calculated, and extremely dialogue-heavy. It’s less about spectacle and more about slow tension. That said, it’s still a great show. The acting is sharp. The storytelling is tight. You feel every decision, every lie, every close call. There’s a certain brilliance in how the show makes you root for someone doing such terrible things — and that, alone, makes it worth a watch. Final Thoughts: Ripley is a moody, masterfully constructed thriller that fans of noir, true crime, or psychological dramas will likely love. It’s just not a series I’d personally revisit — not because it’s bad (it’s not), but because it simply isn’t my style. But that’s the beauty of film and TV — not everything is for everyone, and what didn’t quite click for me might end up being your next obsession. Verdict: ✅ Worth a watch 🚫 Not a rewatch (for me) 🎥 Stylish, cerebral, and hauntingly quiet Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Docabilly D One of the best series ever.
