      Critics Consensus

Visually sumptuous and enriched with cultural verisimilitude, Shōgun is an epic adaptation that outdoes the original.

Max B Epic show with a great storyline. Great acting and beautiful sets. Can't wait for the next episode! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review David M People who say this show is as good as Game of Thrones are delusional. GoT was NEVER anywhere near as good as Shogun. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Glenn C Great story, plenty of drama, fantastic acting all around. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Richard B Cosmo Jarvis (the English Anjin -pilot) helps Lord Toranaga prepare for battle against Lord Ishido in order to screw the Catholic Portuguese out of Japan. Lavish sets, glacial plot movements, minimal acting and the feeling that the Westerners really are inferior to the still, repressed Japanese feudal society dominate the proceedings. Unfortunately, the pace is like a Japanese tea ceremony - slow, pretentious and wildly uneven. There are spurts of ultra violence, then nothing for hours. I see from the reviews that people like this history lesson with a strong sense of self hatred and Japan awe. Not me. It is too slow - I like drama to have you know, drama. I enjoyed the book much more, which makes many of the same points well and a lot faster. I don't have to pretend to like this craven ode to orientalism and detest some of its snobbery dressed up as cultural superiority. Maybe Series 2 will move faster, at a sail's pace. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Jennifer W Just more gore and violence no one needed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Leela P It is Game of Thrones in the truest sense—minus the nudity and violence. Pure drama. Cold and calculating at times. Graeme Blundell The Australian It’s the most impressive opening, the detail in mise en scene and costume immaculate and the acting, able to seemingly grasp the mentality of feudal Japan with its values of patience, loyalty, and sacrifice. Apr 5, 2024 Full Review Louise Rugendyke Sydney Morning Herald Shogun is epic television as it should be. Wild plotting, complex characters and a real sense that you don’t quite know where it’s going, but you’re happy to stay for the ride. Mar 28, 2024 Full Review Camilla Long Times (UK) [Shōgun] is gripping: a sumptuous, startling, terrifically meaty rethink of the 1975 historical bestseller about John Blackthorne...
