Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Jun 6, 2024 Full Review Ed Power Daily Telegraph (UK) Shōgun hasn’t been perfect. When it was slow, it was practically stationary. But the moving finale more than paid off all the time and patience demanded of its audience. Rated: 4/5 Apr 23, 2024 Full Review Phillip Maciak The New Republic One of the main features of this show—and the source of its most important narrative innovation—is how rigorously rule-bound its characters are. Apr 17, 2024 Full Review Sarah Knight Adamson Sarah's Backstage Pass Japan's 17th-century historical drama "Shōgun" is by far a Hollywood masterpiece-- meticulous details in the set design, wardrobe, & character plots take you back to a time of protocol, duty, love, and power-- when one lapse in judgment can mean death. Rated: 4/4 Oct 23, 2024 Full Review Abe Friedtanzer Cinema Daily US In a world this massive, there’s much to find fascinating, and audiences are sure to connect with many facets of its multidimensional historical saga. Rated: B+ Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? The meaning behind each [death] is only augmented by the three-dimensional performances delivered by a cast that knows they might be next. Nobody can afford to mail it in. Gorptholemew T 🍅 9.4/10 This show takes a really long time to get kicking but once it does IT DOES. I think while you watch it, you don’t realize how great it is until you’ve given it a couple seconds to fully kick in and once the plot unfolds you see how smart it is, even if it can be convoluted and confusing at points. It’s tied together really well. is it so good plz watch this show it’s just really great. It has amazing set pieces contrasted by the atmosphere, which just beautifully merges together to make an incredible experience and vibe. Shogun is definitely one of the best shows of the year. Pls give me season two I NEED IT WRITE FASTER… plz 🥺. I mean i’d be willing to wait for them to perfect. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Javier C Preciosa serie !!! Con una descripción detallada y actuaciones magistrales en camino a convertirse en una serie de culto … Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Hendry L This is an excellent drama set in 1600s Japan. The plot is incredibly engaging, and it exceptional explores political tension, religion, and Japanese culture. Hiroyuki Sanada gives a phenomenal performance as Lord Toranaga, and Anna Sawai is a surprising standout as Mariko. Cosmo Jarvis plays the white man outcast John Blackthorn, and he can come off a bit stiff in his performance, but I think overall, he does a great job as an outsider. My only gripe is the final episode, with the series not portraying what it built up in a more impactful way. Nevertheless, this is still one of the best TV shows in recent history, and I highly recommend it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Denys S One of the best series of 2024! It’s fascinating to watch the cultural contrasts between the main characters unfold. Lord Toranaga making some truly unexpected moves was brilliant. The show is a beautifully crafted adaptation of the book, capturing all the emotions and depth of the original story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/24 Full Review M. Hassan R I went in thinking it to be a bleak and boring show with high ratings, in other words without any expectations. To my surprise I got a feudal Japanese-esque Game of Thrones with intense politics, bloody drama and thrilling gore. I 10/10 recommend it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Z Y The show is a fantastic watch, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone even slightly interested in its themes. However, I can’t help but nitpick some details: using English instead of Portuguese, without a Portuguese dub available, feels a bit illogical. Also, the protagonist’s minimal use of Japanese, especially later in the story after spending significant time in Japan, is perplexing. Although his Japanese expressions increase as the story progresses, it didn’t quite feel sufficient, especially considering he’s based on a historical figure who became deeply integrated into Japanese society. Despite these factors, it’s still an impressive show overall. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
