What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smoke obscures its appeal with coy plotting until it eventually lights a fire under its story, but commanding turns from Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett keep this drama watchable throughout.

Dan Einav Financial Times Unfortunately there’s a certain unsatisfying irony about a show that sends up pompous prose while presenting us with clunky lines itself. Rated: 3/5 Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Alison Herman Variety “Smoke” as a whole -- and especially as a vehicle for Egerton -- is deeply satisfying, a fast and clean burn that leaves little behind. Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday It's just asking a lot of an audience to sift through so much filler before getting to the potential good stuff. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Weiting Liu Common Sense Media This series is less about solving crimes than just watching something combust. The soul of Smoke is the fire itself: morbidly poetic and viscerally alive. Jul 7, 2025 Full Review Matthew Simpson That Shelf Egerton is a great actor at the centre of a great cast, and that makes Smoke worth your time. But you’d be easily forgiven for saving this one up to binge on a rainy day. Jul 3, 2025 Full Review James Delingpole The Spectator The drama seems to be working overhard to beg us, ‘No wait! This is different! Just stick around and see where we’re going with this!’ Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Chi T This show isn't hitting. I appreciate the attempt, but there is a lack of coherent storytelling and the acting feels forced. Edgerton's voice is strange and consistently pulls me out of his performance. It is quite beautiful. The dark, brooding palette and production design evoke feeling, which is beautiful. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/11/25 Full Review Sherie C I just wish the main characters were likeable! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Kathy P Found this movie to be offensive; especially for the people who experienced the fires in California lately. Smoke is all atmosphere and no spark. It’s a film that wants to be deep, but drowns in its own self-seriousness. Save your money and let this one disappear into the haze. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Carianne C Egerton, usually magnetic, seems lost in a script that doesn’t know what it wants to be — a gritty noir? A psychological deep-dive? A political thriller? Instead of committing to one path, Smoke chokes on its own over-ambition. The dialogue is clunky, weighed down with lines that feel like they were written by someone who Googled “how to sound profound.” Every character speaks like they’re auditioning for a gritty HBO drama, but none of it lands with any real impact. Don’t recommend. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Bob A This show is dull boring and very poorly written, Dennis Lehane is very overrated and not a great writer. The dialogue is ridiculous! The acting is weak and underwhelming. You can only watch an arsonist throw little fire detonators in the potato chips isle so many times before you are bored to death! The shows premise is dumb and insulting to all, especially in the wake of all the fires that devastated a large swath of land in the country and has yet to even be resolved! It's a very insulting show to all who were victimized by all the fire devastation! This show is a hard pass! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/10/25 Full Review Ben F This is like watching a great novel put onto the screen. Dennis Lehane is a master storyteller and his brilliance translates into this show. Great work here. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
