What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smoke obscures its appeal with coy plotting until it eventually lights a fire under its story, but commanding turns from Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett keep this drama watchable throughout.

Graeme Blundell The Australian If the early episodes are a little lacking in momentum, the highly visual direction by Skogland in collaboration with her director of photography Sam McCurdy is wonderfully immersive and often frightening, never allowing you to not stay involved. Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Laura Miller Slate Smoke is really a volatile character drama fronting as an anodyne procedural. Jul 14, 2025 Full Review Dan Einav Financial Times Unfortunately there’s a certain unsatisfying irony about a show that sends up pompous prose while presenting us with clunky lines itself. Rated: 3/5 Jul 1, 2025 Full Review Dustin Rowles Pajiba You’ll shake your head at the absurdity, but for pure entertainment value, it’s tough to beat. Aug 13, 2025 Full Review Belen Prieto Espinof 'Smoke' is an immersive experience that simmers slowly... And while this slowness may initially seem risky for a genre like this,...those who let themselves be carried away will discover a very seductive thriller. Much to my surprise, the story manages to even make you feel for at least one of the arsonists, which shocked me. Not that you’ll... Rated: 4/5 Aug 11, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Jordan V. It’s a bad program. You shouldn’t watch it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Audience Member This series was honestly such a letdown. The plot was all over the place, and the characters? They just didn’t feel real. Taron’s role was unconvincing —it could’ve been so much more, but instead, it just felt totally unconvincing. The scenes were despicable. The whole thing felt forced, like they were trying too hard to make it dark and gritty, but it just came off as messy and unrealistic. It’s honestly disappointing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Doris D Too many emotionally damaged characters to keep up with. Doesn’t need a second season to continue the charade. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review David D This was straight-up terrible and completely ridiculous. I mean, seriously—why the animal cruelty? Taron’s character was just cruel for no reason, and that scene with the Smollett cop and the gun in his mouth? Come on! Really?!? Totally out of left field. The script was a mess—nothing made sense. Honestly, I'm just disappointed. The writing just came off fake and forced. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Aria P. I LOVED this series! I’m usually able to predict storylines but this one had twists and turns I never saw coming. After the 3rd episode, I was on the edge of my seat and counting down the hours until Friday’s new release. I rarely watch a movie or series that makes me feel such extremes for the same character-much less 4 or 5 of the characters in the same season. And the acting….OMG PHENOMENAL. Ntare Mwine’s delivery and execution had me speechless, and it has stayed me for WEEKS. The show did an excellent job portraying an underlying theme of childhood trauma & how that presents later in life, as well as the way a person sees themselves in their minds and how they rationalize their actions in life. I REALLY would LOVE to see a season 2, 3, 4….Apple, Green light please!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Timothy L This story never engaged me the way I thought it would. None of the characters are particularly likeable—not that this is essential for a good drama—and while the plot has a surprise that is revealed early on, there is not much to it after that until it becomes absolutely ridiculous in the final two episodes. The acting is mixed. As I watched, I found myself wondering if Taron Egerton's performance was bad or brilliant. I think an argument could be made either way. In contrast, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine's performance as Freddy is unquestionably brilliant. The scene between Dave and Freddy in episode 7 is the highlight of the entire season. It is Emmy worthy. Freddy is the most interesting character in the series. Unfortunately, the whole season comes off the rails beginning with a development in episode 8 that takes the storyline down a completely implausible path. At one point in episode 9, I thought I was watching a superhero movie. By the end of that final episode, I was just glad it was over. There are definitely unresolved plotlines that would justify a season 2, however I couldn't care less if it ever gets made. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
